Had a discussion in the cockpit the other night about the MINIMUM rate of descent ATC expect once cleared to leave a level. We could not find a JAR OPS reference in our Jepps.
Could someone please shed some light on this for me.

:ok: UK rule is minimum 500fpm for climb or descent. If unable to comply, then ATC must be advised.

Appears in ENR section of the UK AIP.

ATC are used to an a/c descending at a reduced rate until intercepting nominal profile as determined by the FMS. This has led to a whole range of control methods which some years ago would not have been necessary when an a/c would perform in a fashion typical of type, and ATC experience of traffic handling was a little simpler. The question is a good one, and very relevant to modern high density controlling.

More than 500fpm climb/descent, and less than 1000fpm in the last 1000ft to level-off in RVSM airspace.

Desafinado, don't flame me, but isn't what you are quoting, referred to as standard rate of descent, rather than minimum rate of descent. I can't find it in the books either, but minimum 500ft per minute rings a bell.
