Firstly, I do live within the EDI zone (just) so that might make a difference but...
We have just had the Reds make a flypast of something in the area (might be the castle for the Tattoo)and an orbit or two then depart NE at 1000ft ish to Leuchars.

I've check ais on the net and the 0500 number but I cannot find any relevant notams for this. The closest is for a flypast at the castle at 1950z on the 23rd Aug. Aic 65/2004 also has nothing listed for today.

Have I missed something?

They are due to make a flypast of Edinburgh Castle at the close of the Tattoo at 21.00 local time tonight (Tuesday) - it was a Eurofighter last night, Tornado on Saturday and a Nimrod the night before. I could not find a NOTAM either but it is listed on the Red Arrows Web Site - I wonder if the difference is that it is not a display - simply a fly past. Alternatively it might be because it is in the Edinburgh Class D Zone. Do they only NOTAM the Red Arrows if it is in Class G?

As well as NOTAMS it is worth a scan of the latest AICs too.

It appears Grow45 is correct. Not listed if in controlled airspace.

Prob 30 boys having fun in class G, observing the speed limit.

Grow45 has it just about spot on.
It's a fly past - not a display, it's already wholly within controlled airspace therefore no need for extra promulgation.

The answer is that it has been notam'd:

NAVW: FROM 04/08/16 19:50 TO 04/08/21 18:40 H5474/04
D)AUG 16-20 1950-2010, AUG 21 1820-1840
E)AUS 04-08-0106/2869/AS3
AIR DISPLAY. FLYPAST WI 2NM RADIUS PSN 5557N 00312W
(EDINBURGH CASTLE, LOTHIAN)
F)SFC G)2000FT AGL

There is also a notam for a searchlight display.

I use the much maligned NATS site for NOTAMS and find it excellent once you get used to it.

Where are you guys getting your NOTAMs from? It's a bit worrying that some sources might not be telling the whole story.

Its a fair cop guv!. When I looked last night without really thinking about it I just did an Aerodrome Briefing for EGPH (Edinburgh) rather than for the Scottish FIR. It clearly shows in the FIR briefing.

Okay so it doesn't need to be notamed because it's in CAS.

However, For those who think that they found the notam.......look at the times in the notam and then look at the time of my original posting! :)

They came back again later in the evening which is what the notam was for.

The reds did a flypast of Portland last Friday, at <500'. I couldn't find any Notams about it either...?

Perhaps the Reds are beginning to think they really omnipotent!

EA, remind me what that text on the UK ICAO charts says about flying below 2000'. (Especially the bit about 0 --> 1000' )

Then can you remind me who provides the Red Arrows' aircraft?

Thanks... :)

yea yea yea, but thats like saying

"extensive flying occours anywhere in the UK between FL0 and FL400";)

I'm perfectly aware what the text says, but when Yeovilton LARS cannot be provided, limited RIS from Plymouth Mil due to the radar head on portland not working, how can you see and avoid high speed military jets, and more to the point, can they see and avoid you? (ok, the Reds are easier, they're in formation.....and they're Red).....
