Despite having an FAA license based on my UK license(issued prior to (9/11) I still fell foul of the US system. I wanted to just do a seaplane rating, I was not allowed to do the check ride till I had a verification of my UK licence despite having alll the visa requirements. I was totally unaware, so beware!

and the reason is very simple:

your FAA licence is based on a licence, that no longer exists! it has nothing to do with 9/11 but with the fact that we now have JAR and your licence has a new number! It's a completey NEW licence!
I'm an American citizen and my old FAA, based on my old German one, is also no longer valid. I, too, must apply for a new validation at least 60 days before going to the US! I went to the States last January thinking, since my (old) FAA licence is in their system, I'd have no problem and the 60-day deal was only for new ones... I was wrong :{

Not sure what the situation is in Germany but in the UK oldies like moi still have CAA licences which are valid and the FAA restricted license is valid.

However if you want to add ratings to those restricted licenses you do have to get them validated.

As I understand it you don't have to do that if you just want to hire or do your BFR.

On what I think is the same subject: I am doing a standalone FAA PPL but the FAA now appear to require a validation from the CAA, confirming my present details. Is this really correct? One should be able to do a standalone FAA PPL without having anything to do with the CAA; let's say you never had a UK license?

I suppose this is because I am not doing the entire FAA PPL training but making use of my existing training. Which in turn means I must be known to the CAA, so the FAA require them to certify I exist...

For a piggyback license, it would be more obvious.
