Logging of Mutual Hours

Having been alerted to a particular AIC (which I can't for the life of me seem to find), I'm interested to hear some views on how Oz instructor trainees should be logging their mutual hours for the issue of the Rating. In the past it has been assumed that both pilots log the flight as PiC (I must confess to having done the same when I did my Rating a few years back too). However, this should not be the case - as only one pilot should be logging the flight as PiC. So what about the other guy? He can't really log it as dual, because he is not really under training as such (what with his partner not yet holding instructor qualifications). Therefore, he should log it as co-pilot time instead. However, where does this place him with regard to only 50% co-pilot time being recognized overall?

De La Valette, I know you've got some opinions about this topic. Would certainly appreciate some other comments from out there also...

In the UK the student can only log it as Supernumary and it counts as passenger hours i.e. its of no use. It can't be P2 unless the aircraft is certificated for two pilots!

Don't know about OZ but when I did my CAA AFI rating it was both log P1 - that's what was 'mutual' about it.

Papasmurf, I don't have the particular AIC now but I do remember the outline of it. With the mutual flying, one person can only be in Command and log it as PIC. I suppose it's up to the two trainees to fight it out as to who wants the command time. When I did my rating we split it up about 50/50. The other one is supposed to log the time as Co-pilot S/E time (unless you do your rating in a multi which I have never heard of) The only trouble is the CASA logbooks don't have Copilot S/E column in there so I just put it in the specialist column in the left hand side. I'm not sure whether you count 50% of that time towards your total, or whether you count it all. I guess that you should really only include 50% although I've included it all. Only makes a difference of a few hours anyway!
