Around 250 passengers and crew escaped unhurt when an Egypt Air plane enroute to Abidjan from Cairo crash landed in northern Nigeria. The airplane was attempting to make an emergency landing at the International airport in Kano early on Tuesday morning, when it nose dived.

Thats the AFP blurb, does anyone know what really happened?

YouŽre correct.
According to local news the aircraft was an A300 with ~ 250 on board.
..."dropped shortly before landing"...
It is not clear what they understand of a "crash landing". no pics yet..

The "international airport" in Kano... :D . "Landing spot" would B more appropriate.

IŽve had the misfortune to get to know Kano pretty well. Any number of reasons why you can stuff the airplane in there. Perhaps the lights failed on short final, perhaps the tower were confused about which runway you were landing on or the incessant babbling of the controller put the pilot off (I know guys who have threatened to visit the tower and hurt the guy after engine shutdown). Or maybe it was something as simple as a cyclist on the active runway (seen that) or perhaps a stray goat got ingested. Even if you grease it on in DNKN the runway is so rough youŽll think the gear has collapsed.

I've never been sure what a 'nosedive' is. What other sort of dive is there (apart from those places in Soho where you can get a drink at 4am)?
