Just when can Training for FI commence??

I am in the fortunate position where I can gain training and pay only for aircraft hire for the FIC(JAR). I will have to do the training part time to fit in with the instructors schedule. Does anyone know if I can commence training before having my CPL? I figure by the time I have completed the training I will have my CPl etc... Any comments? Or is it more constructive to do a full time course?? I would look to save the money though :)

Max,

You don't need a CPL before you can start the FIC.

In fact you can quite happily teach on a PPL, just don't take any cash for it http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/frown.gif
Although tea and sticky buns are allowable :)

You do need knowledge to CPL level though. In otherwords Nav and Tech group papers passed.

However if you do not have a CPL you will require 150 hours PIC instead of the 100 hours PIC required with a CPL.

So bottom line is....I have the hours but not the exams. I am studying for them now. So feasible I can start training for FIC??

JAR-FCL 1.335 reads:

Before being permitted to begin an approved course of training for a FI(A) rating an applicant shall have:

(a) completed at least 200 hours of flight time of which at least 100 hours shall be as pilot-in-command if holding an ATPL(A) or CPL(A) or 150 hours as pilot-in-command if holding a PPL(A);

(b) met the knowledge requirements for a CPL(A) as set out in AMC FCL 1.470(b);

(c) completed at least 30 hours on single-engine piston powered aeroplanes of which at least five hours shall have been completed during the six months preceding the pre-entry flight test set out at (f) below;

(d) received at least 10 hours instrument flight instruction of which not more than five hours may be instrument ground time in a flight procedures trainer or a flight simulator;

(e) completed at least 20 hours of cross-country flight as pilot-in-command, including a flight totalling not less that 540 km (300 nm) in the course of which full stop landings at two different aerodromes shall be made; and

(f) passed a specific pre-entry flight test with an FI qualified as in JAR–FCL 1.330(f) based upon the proficiency check as set out in Appendix 3 to 1.240 within the six months preceding the start of the course. The flight test will assess the ability of the applicant to undertake the course.

Note para (b) - You must have passed the CPL exams before commencing the course.
