View Full Version : Garmin Pilot 3 - EBAY - Madness?
I am in the market for the above, but being tight, would like one as cheap as possible. So I ventured onto Ebay, and frankly am amazed at the prices these things are going for. There is one just about to go for £292 plus p&p. :confused: :confused: Que? You can get a brand spanking new one from Harry's for £295. The others up for auction are going that way too. Another one (which has 2 days to go) is currently going for £255.
OK, I am tight, but a bargain is something like 1/3 or a 1/2 off isn't it, not a couple of quid.
Am I missing something?
Anyone out there with a shiny new 296 prepared to sell a Pilot 3 for a sensible price.... doh, why bother go to Ebay and make a mint...

Don't you have to add the dreaded VAT to Harry's prices? That £295 becomes £347 of your English pounds - please.

SSD. Already did. Harry has it at £250 before VAT = £293.75. So the saving is even worse - all of £1.25...

Prices for flying stuff, and other specialist stuff too, go for silly prices on Ebay. Some of it may be for the reasons mentioned previously, but not all of it. I know; I've sold loads on there, much of it when I was raising funds for charity and was given things to sell. Out of date charts selling for nearly as much as the new ones!!!!! :confused: Come on now. And I described them clearly and accurately as what they were.
I think a number of people don't check prices before bidding. Or they're happy with a 10p discount...a discount is a discount. Also, there are a number of dealers on there...I wanted an Icom transceiver, tried Ebay but they were too expensive, tried bidding on those available outside the UK, and found myself bidding against one of the guys selling several of them on UK Ebay! He dropped out, and I got it for around £200; he obviously figured he wouldn't make a decent mark-up if he bid any higher. I thought of following his example - buying on US Ebay, selling in the UK - but by the time I'd paid duty it was hardly worth it. However, US Ebay is far cheaper for aviation stuff (click on "Items available to the UK). But for a GPS, you'd have the wrong database and so on, so you need to do your sums carefully first.

Who cares what it started at? It's what it ends at that counts! The two rarely bear any resemblence to one another.

I have just purchased a 195 (yes I know its dicontinued) but it does a bit more than a Pilot three, just fewer waypoints.
Personally I tend to fly in straight lines (its cheaper and maintains my radio skills) so 250 waypoints will do just fine for now.
Could do with a swivel mount and an interface cable - anyone got one going cheap?

I have got both a 196 and a Bose-X off Ebay. Paid about 3/5 best new price on the 196 – 3 months old – and about 2/3 best new price on the Bose, 1 month old, used once. Both were immaculate and are working fine. Both purchesed 6 - 9 months ago.
