Anyone know what happened to Aviation Manchester, a flying school based at Woodford until, I think, about a year ago?

They operated a couple of Katanas and, if memory serves, a 172 and Thorpe. I had a check flight in one of the Katanas, more to see what it was like than with a view to taking it out regularly, in October 1999.

Since then, they seem to have disappeared. When I spoke to a duty officer at Woodford ATC, he seemed to suggest that BAe had got all huffy about having other organisations on their airfield and given Aviation Manchester their marching orders.

Any clues...?

Incidentally, I enjoyed the Katana immensely. Very well mannered, super vis and, though a little cramped, very comfy. Made the 152's and 150's in my logbook look like something from the steam age!

Moved to Hawarden and I believe now part of the Chester Flying Club.

I thought Hawarden was closed to anything smaller than a Beluga. Can I fly in then?

In the mid ninties BAe were looking to make some extra cash. They started developing Woodford as a GA airfield. They subsequently got a RAF upgrade contract. RAF didn't like civvies wandering all over the airfield, so BAe asked GA to leave!

I guess people will think twice about going back to Woodford when BAE Systems need more cash again!
