SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 17 - Officials closed off part of San Francisco International airport on Wednesday after a baggage scanner picked up a possible sign of an explosive in an unattended piece of luggage. Airport spokesman Ron Wilson said part of the terminal used by United Airlines was evacuated after officials made the discovery while examining the bag that had been left in the terminal lobby. "It did hit positive on explosive materials," Wilson told local KCBS radio, adding the bag has been isolated and was being examined by the bomb squad. The possible discovery of an explosive device came as airports across the nation were strengthening security following the Sept. 11 hijack attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Or not, as the case may be.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - Flights were delayed Wednesday morning at the San Francisco International Airport after a suspicious suitcase was found.

Police evacuated a portion of the north terminal at about 8:20 a.m. Pacific time after a United Airlines employee saw an unattended suitcase that was thought to contain explosives.

Some airport operations, including some United (UAL: news, chart, profile) flights in and out of the airport, were halted, according to a United Airlines spokesman.

Police opened most of the terminal about 90 minutes later after moving the suitcase to a safer location and trying to determine what was in it. The owner of the luggage finally arrived to claim and to open it.
