Any VB aircrew able to detail what sort of rosters you work? ie two nights away a week two days off etc etc

What sort of hours are you doing a month? Are you expected to do overtime?

Much appreciated....

This is rumour as I don't work there, but, I believe Melbourne base does less nights in-a-row than Brisbane. I believe a former colleague, now Brisbane based with VB was in Darwin recently, in the middle of a six day trip! :yuk:

Close friend with VB in Brisbane works on average 4 days per week plus a reserve or grey day ( does not have to work ). Some times two 3 day trips back to back. All in all about 70 flying hours a month as f/o. Not sure about Capt though. No such thing as overtime at VB.

Brisbane lads do more over nights, typically around 10 to 12 nights a month. Most trips are 3 or 4 days straight and as stated sometimes go back to back i.e 6 days straight. Stick hours vary from around 70 per month up to over 90 a month. Duty time causes the most fatigue. Particularly back of the clock and extended layovers between turn arounds. I think QF are very similar.

Wow, you must be knackered after all that roster with the back of clock flying!
Couple of questions - why are there ML layovers when there is a base there?
Also, is the BN-HB-BN route just a day trip or does it include other flying?

Thanks for the imformative replies!

CAPT CLARET: unsure of the BN based colleague?

LEVEL CHANGE: Thanks for the roster! Pardon my ignorance but what is the diff between a grey and stby day?

Anyone able to help with payscales and allowances etc etc, time to captaincy and if the type rating is re-imbursed over the first three yeras it would help to squash any rumours!

Time to command - depends on a lot of factors, though it is probably safe to say it is going to get quite a bit longer than it is today as the fleet expansion slows.

Salaries - have a look at the website - it used to be osiris or something but believe that it might have changed - a search will find the current EBA.

the endorsement is NOT re-imbursed over 3 years though you get paid full tilt wages from day one with the company rather than a training wage.

you do - during this current eba -get a $15000 retention bonus (pro rata for F/O's) paid at the end of June each year. that will be rolled into the salary in the next eba apparantly.

a grey day is a day where you do not have to be contactable, and do NOT have to work if asked, but if you do work you get nothing for it. (strangely not too many people work on a grey day!)

A reserve day is where you HAVE to be contactable and if they get you they have got you - there is no option.

a day off (DDO) is as it sounds a day off. you don't have to be contactable. They can call you and ask you to work, you can say no - there is no obligation - but if you do you get paid PLUS another day off.

We also get a percentage payment at the end of the financial year if they meet their profit targets - it isn't huge but better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick....

hope that helps

Level Change- don't you feel absolutely shagged doing an east coast sector after a Redeye (PER-SYD, PER-MEL, DRW-SYD etc.)?

ASSK OFF,

I'm not sure what you mean by; CAPT CLARET: unsure of the BN based colleague?

The guy I was referring to is Brisbane based, we were colleagues in his former life, I bumped into him entering the Hay St Mall on Saturday morning. I wasn't sure if he was in the middle of a 6 day trip as the info was gained in a conversation with a third party. In our brief conversation on Saturday morning, he did mention 3 and 4 day trips, some being back to back.

Well, with approximately 14 days off on this roster I can prepare myself for those long back of the clock sectors! Then again, I don't think I can ever get used to those RED EYES! Doing an east coast sector after a redeye does get you feeling a little tired, but with our controlled rest facility available I find that my body tends to get through it okay with the 30 min sleeps. The only reason I can think of why we do MEL overnights is that our rostered tour of duty runs out on some of the pairings that have sectors down in that part of Australia and they can't get us back to BNE. The BNE-HBA-BNE pairing I have never done, I would say that it might be done with a MEL crew eg. MEL-BNE-HBA-BNE-SYD?? Hope that information helps. All in all it is a great company to work for and I, for the first time in my career, am not looking for another job elsewhere!!:)

G'day all,

Does anybody know if one has substantial F/O 737 time, but is short of the 500 hrs me command, would they still be considered with VB?
With regards to basing, does one have a base choice or do you take what you are given?
Thanks,
SD

As far as I am aware, the 500 PIC is a hard rule - it certainly has been in the past.

There have been people who have been told to go and get the 500 PIC before they can be considered, and as far as being competitive there are plenty of people out there who do have the 500 PIC - so the laws of supply and demand come into play.

Sorry if that isn't the answer you wanted.

Good Luck!

Sorry, but somebody has to ask the obvious.... how the bejesus does one get substantial 73 time without 500 me command??
Use to be that you had to have a good 3 or 4 thousand hours even to get a look at a 737.

‘’Sorry, but somebody has to ask the obvious.... how the bejesus does one get substantial 73 time without 500 me command??’’

In this part of the world that is not uncommon. In fact guys/gals with 200 hrs fresh out of flight school get breaks on jets. Besides, substantial single pilot SE/ME PIC can go against you. You know all this crap about acquiring bad habits.
My experience before joining was 1200PIC SE, 300PIC ME, all piston from the good old bush.

‘’Use to be that you had to have a good 3 or 4 thousand hours even to get a look at a 737.’’ Maybe all turbine as well.
In Aus- yes.

I counted only 3 serious BOCs, and a couple of late nights. What I did count however, was the fact that you had more time off than on, flight duty periods and periods free of duty.

How do I apply for a job like that - flying a modern light twin, no tie, no cap, etc.?
