There's a raging debate this afternoon at Rimmer News over what the E in 7E7 stands for anybody got any thoughts?

I believe it is economy or economical..........

To do with less fuel burn due to bleedless engines and weight-saving ideas such as carbon-fibre skin panels, also more use of electrical systems rather than hydraulics.

I thought it was to make it e-commercial, e-mail, and e-xcitingly interweb-age!

7-ELECTRIC-7 ?!

As, i believe that i've read many of the aircraft systems will not be driven by 'bleed' air from the engines, but electrically powered instead ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the 757 called the "7N7" during development? The "N " standing for "narrowbody". It makes sense then to call this one the "E" for "economics", since this is supposed to be the big marketing argument for selling this new Boeing.

Perhaps Boeing will rename it the "787" eventually...

When plans for the 'Chronic Boozer' were shelved, the 'Super Efficient Aircraft' tag was used to describe what became the 7E7.

So, my own take is that E stands for Efficient.

Whatever it stands for, it's got us all talking about it - a brand managers dream.

If the truth be known, the aircraft was called the '77' but the advertising manager's 7 year old son wrote it down as 'seveny seven.

In Madison Av lingo, this translated to '7E7'

Sorry about this but ...........

The E is for electric. The 7E7 is Boeing's venture into More Electric Aircraft, with all flight controls, flaps etc being electrically driven as in the A380.

Bleed air will be minimally used, on engine nacelle anti icing for example, although they even looked at electric anti ice for the nacelles! Lots of power needed. The generators are huge.

Hope that helps a little.
