I have been working towards my FI rating, but have also recently read up on the Class Rating Instructor (CRI) side of things. From what I can glean in LASORS it means at flying club level you can effectively do biannual training flights, type conversions, currency checks etc.. on a PPL, without needing CPL knowledge/CPL/Class 1 Medical?

However, I have never come across any standalone CRIs - has anyone else? Is it a realistic proposition / are there anywhere you can do a CRI course? Is it a worthwhile stepping stone to FI(R)? Also, I guess fully qualified FIs would be loath to see PPL/CRIs take flying time for above flights.

Would be interested to hear any thoughts.

There are quite a few CRIs around - including most of the PFA coaches. A CPL would still be needed to be remunerated, though I think the PFA coaches have "allowable expenses".

I believe about 1 week/ £1000 is the typical cost. They offered the course where I did my FIC - PM me if you'd like details.

I suspect there are quite a few clubs who could use the facility, especially at busy weekend periods.
