Can anyone tell me where to find (I've search the CAA site! Nightmare!) or just tell me, what the minimum equipement is required in a N reg aircraft in the UK and Europe to fly IFR legally in it?

The requirements are different in the US, so what's the score?

Here's a good place to start:

Look at Schedules 4 and 5

For an N-reg, it's all set out very clearly in the FAR/AIM. To that, you need to add the unique European stuff (8.33kHz if you're going up there, that sort of thing).

A good lead, but bear in mind that Schedule 4 applies only to G-reg. Schedule 5 applies to all aircraft flying in UK airspace.

More generally, you can find equipment requirements in the appropriate part (different for commercial and GA) of the ICAO's Annex 6. Differences from these requirements are set out in the GEN 1.5 section of each state's AIP.
