Ah, good old "CF-BXO". Built by Vickers Canada in 1940 (C/N CV 209). Served with No's 5, 7 and 9 Squadrons RCAF. Sold into civilian life in May 1940. She flew for various operators until the early 1970's when she was sold to the RAF Museum in Hendon.I remember reading that she was brought back to the UK in an RAF Belfast.

Now on display at RAF Hendon in Super Stranraer Configuration with her old RCAF number, 920. As far as I am aware she is the only complete Stranrear in existence.

I had not seen this photograph of her before. Thanks Evansb.

Apologies, having problems with getting the photo to appear here.

Took this at Fort Paull in East Yorkshire last week. She moved from the Army Transport Museum in Beverley when the museum closed, but good to see she's back on display!

Tilleydog1,

No it was taken at Lavenham on the day she flew in from Biggin Hill. Leonard (The Plough) Cheshire had a go at taxi-ing her later that year and ended up with one main wheel off the taxiway. We had to tow him out with a half-track thing. 1968 I think. Maybe '69, I'd have to dig out the slides and check the date.

Why do so many of the earlier posts only have Photobucket placeholders. Have a bunch of photos been removed by Photobucket or have the posters removed them and not repaired the links?
i am sure there are some wonderful photos hiding there somewhere.

i also see several posts that should have photos in them but only have blank space ???

The Sea Fury T.20 belogned to the Fleet Air Arm Historic Flight at Yeovilton, who wrote it off in a take-off accident some years ago. The remains went to the US where it was fully rebuilt, and it is now back in the UK.

The GN code on the tail denotes RNAS Eglington.

Well Will, I'd like to know how it handles as well. It is a rare 1937 Aeronca LC, one of 65 built, and one of seven remaining. She belongs to the flying collection of the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum (WAAAM), located at Hood River, Oregon. The LC cruises at 108 mph, and is powered by a 90-hp Warner Scarab Jr radial. I have a photo of an Aeronca LC on floats, and in the absence of the large wheel-pants, the aircraft looks a bit better. It is, however, better looking than the Shapley Kittiwake, seen here:
http://www.aviastar.org/pictures/england/shapley_kittiwake.jpg

Perhaps this view of the Aeronca LC is more flattering:

Ah:
The cottage with the Beaver on the dock - the things dreams are made of.
I haven't flown a Beaver on floats since 1978 but I miss them still.
Standing on the dock with a coffee watching the sunrise waiting for the first pax of the day.
The relaxing pumping of the floats.

Falling off the floats trying to drain the tanks.

The sound of a Beaver warming up on a cool morning ......

How many pairs of sunglasses I once owned rest at the bottom of various Canadian lakes and ponds?:{

Sitting on the dock with a cold one watching the sunset after the last flight of the day.
The joys of my youth.

What is the S/N and - is it listed in Beaver Tails (http://www.dhc-2.com/) ?

Just checked - yes it is.

My late father was an avionics engineer, and also dabbled in photography. He always had a camera with him and took a lot of great pictures (in my biased opinion). I recently came accross hundreds of negs and colour slides so bought myself a scanner.

Shame it doesn't seem possible to show these in order as a slide show should be - is it me or photobucket??

The Mosquito had flown from UK to Texas in about 1974 and had stood outside in the Texas rain, sun and humidity since then. It was very tatty, and as far as I know scarcely flew after David Tallichet got it back to California - he in khaki overalls... The Buchons seem to have disappeared too, and the three or four (Casa) He 111s that arrived in pieces while I was there are likewise conspicuous by their absence today. At the time they had something like eight Mustangs and five or six Thunderbolts on strength and claimed to be the fifth or sixth largest "Air Force" in the world...Sadly the Confederate Air Force itself seems to have recently descended into politically (in)correct wishy-washy self-dout and renamed itself the commemorative air force - Sad.

They were a great bunch of people, incredibly dedicated, friendly and hospitable. My three weeks at Harlingen were some of the most memorable of my life, and getting to play in and around those fabulous machines is never to be forgotten.

Special appreciation to the then C.O. Col Jim Hill (praying in the Vultee Vibrator) and Malcolm Russell, my BOQ buddy, 'Nam Vet Huey mechanic and long-term volunteer mechanic at Harlingen. (also in the back seat in one of the B + W pics, as well as several others). One of the kindest guys I've ever met.

Oh, and thanks, Lefty, for the ride!

This was the first public appearance of what is the world's only airworthy FE2B. The engine and prop are restored originals, but most of the rest is a reconstruction.

Hi,
I recently completed "Chasing Shadows", a WWII biography of living Australian air ace, Sqn Ldr Bob Cowper DFC + Bar, French Legion of Honour.
Bob crashed a beaufighter in the Sahara whilst enroute to Malta in 1943. In the book we have shown crashed desert aircraft but were unable to locate a Beaufighter, settling instead for a crashed Wellington.
The book is printed on demand and a suitable substitute photograph could be inserted at the next printing.
Would you consider allowing me to use your photograph for illustrative purposes?
Naturally full acknowledgement to your specification would be included.
I look forward to a response.
Regards,
Steve Lewis

Some splendid images here, nice to see them all thank you...:ok:

Shame that there's no new Whirlwind photo's...

Any one got any tucked away in that old desk of Uncle Tom's or in that shabby box in the attic with all your family photo's mouldering away or the old suitcase on top the tallboy at the top of the stairs, poor little things never going to see the light of day again... :{

Why not go and see if their OK and let them out for a short while, we'd all be so pleased to see them... :E

Thread #362 is now visible. Here is an unusual visitor to Gander, a Russian Catalina. The source, Newfoundland Provincial Archives, says circa 1946, but as it is a PBY-6A lend-lease, it is possible it was photographed on a stop-over during a ferry flight. That would make the photo pre-1946. As over 100 PBY-6As were delivered to Russia via Gander, it probably wasn't that unusual.

I have re-instated the Pics.

PS
Thanks "evansb " for your PM confirming it was because there were

From ArthurBorges post #324 -

It is an odd thing that the first Catalina of a country that produced Catalinas herself was a second hand Catalina: In 1937, Dr. Richard Archbold purchased Consolidated's first commercial PBY. It was a modified PBY-1 licensed as a model 28-1. Guba, as Archbold called his aircraft, was to be used in support of a planned expedition to New Guinea. These plans were altered when Archbold was asked to aid in a mission of mercy. The Soviet government had asked him to sell Guba to them for $230,000[8]. Archbold agreed and the Soviets used Guba to search for Sigismund Levanevsky and his crew who disappeared during a flight across the North Pole from the Soviet Union to Fairbanks. The Canadian researcher Sir Hubert Wilkins flew Guba to Coppermine in Canada's Northwest Territory on the 23rd of August 1937 and made five search-trips during August and September. In the end of 1937, Guba, now registered L-2, was flown to New York, dismantled, and shipped by steamer to the Soviet Union. From January to March 1938, Wilkins flew four more flights, two of which were during the polar night. Sadly Levanevsky and his crew were never found.
Wilkins wrote a letter to Reuben Fleet, saying he had flown 19,000 miles "... under the most adverse weather conditions, flying over rough and uncharted terrain, and for the most part heavily loaded with fuel, supplies, and equipment. It is my privilege to congratulate you and your associates and all those who had part in the fabrication of this airplane, and in no uncertain terms. Without this magnificent airplane, we could not have attempted our difficult task."[2]

Correction - Sir Hubert Wilkins was an Australian. He was not himself a licensed pilot and although he was quite competent he always employed an experienced one to fly his aircraft on his many Arctic and Antartic exploratory flights. His prime role was that of navigator and co-commander. He wrote some amazing books. Simon Nasht recently published an outstanding biography, 'The Last Explorer.'

Spitfire BM597 JH-C is painted in the colours of RAF 317 (Polish) Sqd. The band apprears to me to be the same colour as the spinner, and that of the background colour of the Polish crest aft of the cockpit. Spitfires and Mustangs of 303, 306, 309, and 315 squardons, all Polish, had the band.

Emiritus, evansb, checking through my copy of "Fighting Colours" by M J F Bowyer, he states, at the beginning of Chapter 6, that during December 1940, several changes were made to the colour schemes of home-based day fighters. One of those changes was the introduction of an 18 inch wide band around the rear fuselage, just in front of the tail. The colour of the band was to be Sky. At the same time, it was also decreed that spinners were to be painted the same colour.

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys for the replies. Presume there must have been a reason for it. Seems strange that the a/c would be painted in camouflage colours and then put a band over same.

I used to see this at Luqa Airport when I was a boy. At the time it was noticeable for its heavy distinctive whine of the Tyne engines. I moved to Malta with my parents in December 1958 - so the trials must have been 1959. I do remember it was there for quite a while. Before we left Malta the Vanguard came into service for BEA. Malta at this time was a plane-spotters paradise.

This Meteor started life as NF11 WD592 and was delivered new to the A&AEE on 18 April 1951. She later served with 264 Sqn Royal Air Force and was converted to a TT20. She was struck off charge on 20 January 1975 and in June of that year was flown from Biggin Hill to Mojave where she was registered to Al Letcher & Associates as N94749. In 1988 ownership passed to Al Hansen and Ascher Ward. In May 1993, when this picture was taken, she had been donated to the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum at Edwards AFB and was being prepared for static display.

Great Yeadon shots, brought back a few memories!!

Jetstar N3080 was owned by Saheen Saheen of World Carpets and indeed was visiting in connection with the International Carpet Fair at Harrogate which took place in the first week of September each year during the 1970 & 80s. " I was there!! ".........worked for Courtaulds at the time.

1978 was probably its first visit, think it came for about three years.

Evans, was that the airshow when the B-58 crashed?

Never mind, I now see that there is a C-141 on the ramp, if I remember correctly the C-141 was not flying yet the year the B-58 crashed.

I can't remember the year, and too lazy to look it up, but the B-58 that crashed had just set a new trans-Atlantic speed record. Then there was a crew change and my father was standing with the original crew and all of them watched the aircraft crash after takeoff.

Not a good day.

I've had these two photos for years. I'm guessing that the aircraft were RN Grumman Martlets, but am wide open to correction. Another picture from the same lot is of a group of ATC officers at a Summer Camp, dated Wigtown, July 1945, and that makes me wonder if these two were taken during a Sea Day - the background to the first could well be somewhere just off the coast around Dumfriesshire. No mention of the Carrier involved, I'm afraid.

Can remember the Britannia in the background being flown in when I was still at school. As I remember the Starboard Outer was feathered for its last flight. From the photo looks as though the engines are being removed by crane. It ended up with concrete blocks on steel frames in place of the engines to keep it balanced. Eventually used for fire practice.

If you don't comply with this limitation i will have to resort to removing the post the pics are on.

The point is that some of you re-size the page with a little twiddle - not all have that and in case, VERY wide pages just makes it difficult for the majority.

Interestingly angled shot on the Convair. As the site of the drag bodies is concealed by engines it's difficult to tell if it's an 880 or 990.

Production lists etc suggest AA operated the latter but the example here looks smaller than the Spantax 990s I remember.

evansb
19th Nov 2012, 03:56
American Airlines never operated the 880. The aircraft is a Convair 990 Astrojet. The clear difference is the size of the engine intake diameter, given that the 880 was powered by GE CJ805-3 turbojets which produced 11,650 lbs st., versus the 990's CJ-805-23B turbofans, producing 16,050 lbs. st. each. Unique to the CJ805-23Bs was the aft located bypass fan stage.

This is definitely Fleetlands in Gosport as I took this photo myself around 1986 when they had an open day (I have never been to or heard of Helston Park). If I remember correctly they had an old Bristol Sycamore on display as well but because of it's dilapidated condition I never photographed it,

Hi etsd001,
I have researched the history of Fairy Gannet XG931 and have discovered that it was indeed at Helston from 1984 - 2009 when it moved to Davidstow in Cornwall. I also looked at Fleetlands and they celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1990 which is when I must have taken my photo as I do not recall them having frequent open days. I can only assume the Gannet was on loan for this occasion,

Hi Cyflyer, I got these pics from an ex RAF Navigator some 40 years ago. I think that this shot was taken at the same place the York, Belfast and Beverley shots were taken..either Malta or Akrotiri..cant' remember

Thanks for replying cac_sabre. They don't all look like they are the same place. I'm trying to establish if its Nicosia. Akrotiri, no, forget it for sure. The Argosy, Belfast, and Beverley shots do look like Malta, looking at the background. The Skyways York, and BEA Ambassador not sure, either Malta or Nicosia.
In the York photo, could you do a maximum resolution scan of the bit covering the building and Viking parked infront of it at the left of the photo and just crop that small bit ? I'll recognise if its the Nicosia tower. On the Ambassador, the bit showing the flags above the cockpit and the name on the fuselage under the cockpit.

Just about halfway through all this wonderfull pic's, i reckon there is a common problem: Pictures dissapear!
Through the about 20 years I've been on the internet almost everything have changed several times. Mainly because the electronic development steadily gives new opportunities but also because that We as consumers/users constantly gets bored by the exsisting possibilities and aim for any new development.
This way have the photo-hosting service on the Web changed so often that most of US dont even remember the names of the past, but morely: This will continue in the future.
My reasoning about this is that since too many pictures obviously is lost due to obsolete and closed down photo-hosts or the persons own disuse of the same sevice, this site should better be used as it's own photo hosting service (for as long as it will be present on the web) and pictures should be uploaded as "hardware" directly from Yourself instead of from a hosting service wich historicly might be not-present in few years.
For those who entirely relies on having their pictures 'in the sky' it might be a trick to bring the wished shortly down on own computer again to be able to upload them here.
For the rest of the site: Links to the web tend to be obsolete during time too as many private homepages closes down for several reasons. So dont calculate a linked picture as being there for years to come!

I have had this brass bell for over 60 years. It was my Grandfathers and he always had it in a place of honor in his office. He fought during WW1 in France.
I don't know when this item came into his possession but I know it was important to him. The figure on top looks to be wearing Cold Weather Gear as seen on many B52 pilots during High Altitude missions. Although the pack on his back does not seem to be a parachute. He has heavy mittens, head gear and boots. The bell is of an artillery shell or aerial bomb. The brass clacker is a spent brass bullet. One side of the bell has a Lion with the # 58 below. The other side has a RAF emblem with a crown.
Any information on this piece would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I agree to, I always get very nostalgic when I see photos of that particular BEA livery especially as you to the bland BA scheme that followed.

Although I have no personal photos to post I have vivid memories of overlooking the apron at LHR Terminal 1 in the early 1970's with Tridents and Viscounts in that beautiful BEA scheme along with Cambrian BAC 1-11's, Viscounts, Northeast Tridents and Viscounts and B737's of Aer Lingus in their retro 60's livery.

My first ever flight (in first class to) was on a BEA Trident 3 LHR to DUS in July 1972 three weeks after the Staines crash, was I nervous about that fact I wasn't but I remember my mother being worried.

I spy Bill Knaptons Cub being pushed backwards, John Adams Jungman (I think) as well, many happy hours spent at VSCC events at Finmere, no H & S worries in those days.

Brokenlink, as far as I know he's still around, he'd be mid-80s now. He pranged the Procter at a strip in Kent a few years ago, sustaining quite serious injuries in the process - I'd guess he ate a panel sandwich - but was apparently going to get on with rebuilding it.

He was always around whenever I visited Biggin, never offered me a ride though :-( !

Pretty certain he was sitting at the next table to us in the Dog and Bell at Deptford about 15 years ago; certainly looked like him.

Great photos, Jerbourg. What is the prop airliner between the BAF Viscount and the Air UK F27 in the first image? I'm guessing the Britannia 737s and the 1-11 in the second pic were Jersey diversions?

If you mean the aircraft by the tower, the middle one is a Shorts SD330, in front is a Dan Air HS748.
The 737's & 1-11 were charter flights for Guernsey.

Hi again Jerbourg, The aircraft in the first pic I was wondering about is the one partially obscuring the terminal. Looks like a Viscount or a 748, with a cheat line extending up the tail?

Re: post #444 titled "Il62, airshow, England". This is most definitely not England, but is Prestwick! It clearly shows the old hangar base between the ATC tower and the "bomber pads" near (what were?) the 31 / 21 thresholds. For many years, this old hangar base was used as the staff car park for Atc staff. The hill in the background is "Pisgah Hill". Sorry for the late correction, this is the first time I've looked at this forum.
