Hello, In the C182 manual it says oil should be added at 9 quarts and 12 for long flights,I know of operators that use 8, there is no actual limitation in the POH except the "should". I have asked a AME who said it would not hurt it to run at 2 quarts. Are there any other idears out there?

i'd always keep the quantity on the high side of the scale...just in case.we operate 172's,with a minimum of 6 quarts stated in the manual,i never fly unless there are 7 just to be on the safe side.

Well usually form Memory a 0470 or IO-520 Engine run on 9s. So if it has 9s in it leave, otherwise what you put in will be lost out the breather. If its a long flight, the same, put in on 9s and leave it, adding 12 will just dump 3 quarts for no reason. And if your a Charter Pilot and you continue using all that oil either your Engineer or your boss may become very interested in what your up to.ie. wheres all that oil going?
