Tried this in the questions forum, to no avail. What is the legal requirement for RNAV (externally updated FMS by GPS and automatic radio updating) in these aircraft. While some carriers (about 100 according to the Canadian vendors) have upgraded at no small cost, others (including some very surprising names) have decided that this requirement is only advisory and not mandatory. The CAA and JAA website only has info on BRNAV RNP5. Any gen would be much appreciated.

You might check with your local Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) or get on the FAA web site and send an email to them.

For the UK, RNAV equipment (RNP5 compliant) is mandatory for all flights using the ATS route system above FL95.

Obviously this means that (at usual cruising levels) the 742 would require to be fitted out.

UK AIP GEN 1-5-3 refers.

If you want to fly RNAV in Terminal Airspace, the standard to be used is P-RNAV, Precision Area Navigation, particularly below MSA.

The JAA have produced TGL-10, which contains all of the assumptions that have to be met.

P-RNAV procedures are gradually being introduced at various European region airfields.
