Due to my varied flying career I pop in and out of several forums (sorry, not clever enough to know whether the plural should be fora or forens or whatever) and I have to say that by far the livliest and most interesting and informative one is right here.

There have been several threads of late that have descended into bickering rather than banter; and many discussions over what should and should not be on this forum (or even whether this forum should exist); but for sheer entertainment, and for the amount of accumulated knowledge available here, I think this is a great forum.

Whether you want to know why you constantly get the same thing wrong, want to learn from other's mistakes (thanks Thief13) or just want a good laugh or a good rant, then you won't find a better place.

No real point really, other than to say, it's great.

Well said!

I've learnt far more on this forum than I could ever have imagined. I've met loads of other PPRuNers, some of whom have gone on to become very good friends. I've had the privilege of visiting a number of ATC centres and towers through contacts on this forum, and I've attended as many fly-ins and bashes as I can. Not to mention the hours and hours of boredom (mostly in the office) which have been relieved by PPRuNe, especially Private Flying!

I try my best to give back what the forum has given to me by contributing as much as I can. I only hope that my own contributions help to enrich the flying of others as much as their contributions have done for me.

Hear, hear!

I heartily agree with all you say.

My hope is also to try to give something back - and, of course, trying to contribute to a debate or discussion on a flying matter helps one to understand it better oneself. Its certainly worked for me.

I cant agree more with what has been said - the amount of knowledge in here is awesome and I have learned copious amounts. I too find these forums a great relief for those boring work afternoons - I dont think there has been a day that I haven't visited the forums since I started up.

Personally I havent even started flying yet - I am in the study phase and I feel I know a lot more information than I should - what I mean is I find myself helping other people out purely on what I have learned in here.

Sometimes I reckon you get the odd to55er who comes on and throws a spanner in the works by being arrogant or stupid but hey. I also love the humour in here - sometimes I laugh out loud at some of the stuff said - truly classic.

Keep up the good work campers.

I agree, but for slightly different reasons. Knowledge aquasition here is not of the read it and now know it scheme. By and large I don't belive I have learnt anything here over the material I usually read. However, what this forum in particular is very good at is helping me spot the flaw in my own views/throughts/knowledge.

As an example I have lost count of the number of times I have feaverishly attempted some witty rebuke to a poster, but upon typing realising how dumb I have been. Also, stating what I consider to be fact and getter another view that I hadn't even considered.

Traits of a forum populated by the right folk :ok: Albeit a rather rowdy bunch on occasions :uhoh: :O

Big thanks to the PPRuNE staff :D

Would you keep us informed of your progress as a new FI. I have to say that its a dream job (have equally boring office job) but the thought of living on gruel and sleeping in a tent doesn't fill me will deep joy. I think the family might object too. I hear of such horror stories about the pittance FI's earn, that it puts me right off the idea. Having said that, my old FI has just bought a new TVR :hmm:

Cheers & best of luck

Gulp - had forgotten about that, Evo! I still amaze myself at how far that Europa will glide...

Bcfc, I doubt I'll have quite so much "spare" time once I'm no longer sitting in an office for 8+ hours each day, but I also can't imagine myself completely deserting PPRuNe. You can be sure that I'll be sticking around posting about anything interesting and/or relevant (and no doubt lots of things that are neither interesting nor relevant, too) just as I always do!

Before that, though, I need to finish the FIC, and then find myself a job...

I can quite categorically state that if I hadn't discovered Private Flying a couple of years ago then my license would be gathering dust on the shelf, my DC's would have been sold on eBay and I would not have spent this afternoon doing circuits in a SuperCub (only my 2nd go in a tailwheel - 0/10 for skill, 6/10 for effort, 10/10 for stupid grinning) :D

Of course, I would also have a lot more money to spend on my other interests! :(

Thank you.

I have been home for some long while so I have not been able to see this board either.

But last year there was lots of good information about many types of things from grass flying upto airways joining and weather and rules and notams and safety matters like this

This year when I login again it makes me mad  that somany person are only talking about other non private flying stuff and I cannot find some information I looked for.

Is it because of UK weather that peole do not fly so instead talk about crap? I hope so because this was a good place but now tooo many arguments about not important stuff and real flying private things are being dropped and I heard that some people who I have fight with in past may have gone which is sad because even when I fight I sometimes agreed with them about flying private stuff...

I log off again and come back in one week to see if better or worse and make up my own mind about stuff like these.

bpilatus,

I've been reading PPRuNe for longer than I care to think about, and this forum since it started. And it goes through phases...different things happening, serious, interesting, boring, plain silly, whatever. One thing is guaranteed - this phases will change.

If you want to know about anything, why not start a thread. You don't have to know anything about it, even. I wish I'd asked about landing on grass before the first time I did it with no instruction or advice. Lots of us would be delighted to either read or give advice about...well, anything really.

If this forum isn't what you want it to be, change it! :ok:

For me, the best thing about PPRune has been the friends I've made and the wonderful advice I've received, particularly when I really needed it. I don't think I'd still be flying helicopters without PPRuNe. I certainly wouldn't have my instructors rating. It was a PPRuNer who recommended where to go for my hour building in the US, another who told me about flying helos in Russia, another who looked after my six cats while I went to the other end of the country for the instructors course, another who provided tea and sympathy at frequent intervals while I was down there, several more who answered questions and provided support when the going got tough. PPRuNe is only a website...but actually it's much more than that - and that applies to this forum too.

heated debate about how to fold up charts Easy! - an examiner explained it to me once:

(1) Take a chart.

(2) Fold it up. Anyhow, doesn't matter.

(3) Pick an airfield somewhere in the middle of the visible bit.

(4) Base your aircraft there.

It's about people, isn't it?

Computers and technology are fine for those who like techietoys (yes, I'm one of those sad folk), but what makes the difference is people who care - who care enough to make an effort, and to do something for someone else.

Like the bloke who flew half way across the UK to pick up a stranded aviator he'd met through PPRuNe. And the lively bunch at various fly-ins and bashes and the like. Nice people, who care.

By and large, the selfish don't stay long. They get what they can, and push off.

Sounds a bit like a sermon - sorry!

Personally I think the PF forum has gone downhill over the last few months. There have been a few occasions when a thread has been closed just when it was getting lively. I think the job of the moderators is to moderate only when posts are deliberately offensive/racist etc, not because their 'little hitler' syndrome is kicking in.

The odd online scrap sometimes adds to the spice of life and when they've been left to run have often been more entertaining and informative than what went before.

Oh well, just my opinion.

What would you suggest I do, then, if I think that your "little Hitler" comment was deliberately offensive?

J.A.F.O.,

Grow up?

J.A.F.O.
24th Apr 2004, 22:45
Read a lot of Oscar Wilde, do we, SA?

If I were a moderator I think I may take offence at being likened to a fascist dictator who was responsible for the murder of millions and as your post was a deliberate act in which you drew that comparison then I think it may come under your heading of being deliberately offensive.

Odd that you think it's gone downhill in the last few months when you didn't bother registering until a couple of weeks ago. Why bother?

Now, unlike yourself, I don't happen to think that online scraps are either fun or informative so I won't continue in this vein and I won't even rise to your exhortation to grow up; believe me that was done long ago.

BRL
25th Apr 2004, 06:30
I feel I must add my bit here.

I agree it has sort of gone downhill a bit, only during the pink shennanagins that went on recently. Other than that it goes through periods of being quiet one min' and very lively the next. That must be the nature of this board. It is contributed by you, the public and depending on how busy/good you lot are then that is how busy/good our forum is.

I note you say threads have been closed when getting lively etc, if you could give an example I will be more than happy to explain why, usually they are closed when they decend into personal attacks or just the same points being made and it is left going around in circles. Also noted the comment about mods should only moderate when things get offensive/racist etc well there is a lot more to it than that. A good example is your answer to jafo saying "Grow up". People don't want to see that, you are now causing jafo to respond and in most cases in this scenario the other person takes the bait and it ends up in a slanging match, something no-one wants to see on any forum. You wonder why posts get binned when you post that kind of comment yourself, luckily, jafo has responded well and that is the end of it.

I sort of agree with you last sentence, to an extent, though about scraps adding a bit of spice but you must remember this may appeal to you but not to others and with the huge readership we have here I find it hard finding a good balance between the two. As for the little hitler remark, well, thats a compliment in my book. I have been called far, far worse than that both here and in my day job too, its like water off a ducks back, you get used to it eventually. Although not nice to read this kind of remark I appreciate that some people are unhappy with things and that is how they feel. Fair enough, everyone has a right to say what they think and in here, they usually do. It helps me as I learn from it and that is no bad thing. Another great thing about this forum is the self-moderation mode that kicks in now and again. If someone steps out of line they will be told so by other members and usually that works quite well.

Jafo has finshed his bit now and said his piece so that should be the end of it. If you want to wind people up then go off to the yahoo forums or something where they have forums just for that purpose alone.

Brl.

JAFO,

No need to degenerate into a slanging match as it is a bit boring for other people, however allow me a final retort...
Looking back, telling you to grow up was a touch childish for which I apologise. (I'll also forgive your Fawlty Towers plagiarism).

As a Jew who did have relatives murdered in the Holocaust, I don't really need an explanantion about who Hitler was, but as I expect you're aware, calling somebody a 'little Hitler' is nothing to do with that.
