Future system strategy unveiled

National Air Traffic Services (NATS) today unveils a new systems strategy to position it at the forefront of low-cost ATS infrastructure.

The UK's air traffic control provider is proposing to further economise on infrastructure costs by eliminating unnecessary overhead from its systems in the form of internal network infrastructure. This innovative approach uses pre-existing communications infrastructure to eliminate costly hardware.

In future, when transfer takes place from one sector to another within Terminal Control, pilots will be asked to transmit a few bytes of an internal network message from one controller workstation to another. Thus instead of merely passing point of departure, SID, passing level, cleared level, current routing to the next controller, the pilot will be asked in addition to pass a sixteen character code that represents a few bytes of a communication that would otherwise have been transmitted by an internal network.

This approach will further reduce enroute charges by saving the costs of a £10 ethernet card for each workstation.

And they will also be asked "Mastercard" or "Visa", their date of birth, mother's maiden name and pin number.
