I will be hawaii in several weeks and am looking for suggestions for a pilot shop to purchase a hand held transiever and headset.

Not sure Hawaii is nescessarily the best place to buy stuff like that. Things tend to be more expensive there compared to mainland USA. You may be better off buying on the internet, and get it shipped to your hotel / whatever in Hawaii.

There's a flight school on Kailua associated with Sporty's.

They were pretty helpful when I learned to fly there in '97

Go and see the foks at Island Air Services in the harbour near the airport on Oahu. The guy (name escapes me) has something like 30,000 hours logged ON SEAPLANES, is in his 70's, and showed me his father's pilot's license, signed by one Orville Wright. Will fly you round the island in a beautiful DH Beaver on floats...
