Apologies if this has been done before.

I'm going to be spending a month in Italy and Greece, and would like to know if aircraft are available for hire in either location. If so, what sort of price would I be looking at and what have people's experiences been?

I will be there beginning the last week in August through the first three weeks of September. We are anticipating Northern Italy, and then some time in southwest Greece, some islands and Crete.

Any and all replies welcome.

For clubs etc two starting points are:

http://www.landings.com/ (click the links for clubs or FBOs - US centric but lots of other countries)
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hjcurtis/fclubs.html
and of course google (eg "private flying in XXXX" or whatever)

As for advice and tips: just the obvious:

- don't skip the check list, and don't be afraid to walk away if the plane doesn't look safe
- check local procedures, make sure ATC speak a language you do, or take a local pilot with you

but I'm sure more seasoned travellers may have more useful tips.

Have fun.

try www.aeroclubmilano.it/en/index.html
they have information on lots of italian airfields

Sorry I don't have any personal experience of VFR in Italy, but from the maps it looks very restrictive

No info on Greece.

Let us know how your trip went.

I am looking at Italy and Crete in 2004, but flying there from the UK... should be interesting. Just finding out who is in charge should be interesting.

GuinnessPWS,

which part of northern Italy will you be? Let me know and I'll email the relative aeroclub details.

VRF seems complicated and restrictive in Italy but is quite easy once you get used to it ;)

Aeroplanes at aeroclubs are normally always in good condition and well maintained.

Ciao
