Hello all!

Just looking for some direction on what's going on in Africa. I was born and raised in Kenya but am now living in Canada. I have Canadian and FAA licenses but am looking to return to Africa to work. Not really sure where to start. I know that there will be a conversion process but not really sure where to start.

Any of the veterans interested in helping out a newbie? I have 800 hrs total with 200 hrs multi engine and looking into a DHC6 course (no type rating though). Is it worth it?

Would love to see Mombasa again....still have some family there!

Thanks in advance

Cheers!

hi guys,

Noticing that alot of you guys have 360 ratings I thought it would be easier to post this than to e-mail everyone.

Executive Turbine in South Africa are operating 1 and 1/2 360`s (one in the hanger for ???) but they might be looking for rated guys since its a new type in SA and no ones rated !

Dont know their phone number off hand and sitting in the stix, sorry, best i can do for now !

Good luck and fly safe,

Kenya still lacks enough pilots to fill it's demand though like every other country and it's aviation sector this fluctuates like a yoyo. Years ago you could turn up there with a bare CPL and land a job easily but these days it's not that simple. As a foreigner you are more likely to land a job if you arrive with about 1000 hours most of which is in command. It's not guaranteed though! To renew the license once you have it they send your files off to the immigration office to obtain a letter of no objection. The only country in the world that I am aware of where your renewal is dependant on the immigration approval????:uhoh: :uhoh: It's a risk but in my mind still worth it especially if you can land a job working for one of the operators with a UN contract and you don't intend to live there for more than a few years. Don't misinterpret my words though, I strongly believe they should grant their own pilots jobs before the foreigners (just as we all like to see in our own countries) but once that has exhausted itself then why not!

Gday,

I'm living in Queensland Aust. at the moment, however I am interested in working somewhere in africa.

I have yet to obtain my 500hrs multi-engine command this should occur around April 2005. At present I have 1400hrs total with 270hrs multi-engine command and passes in Australian ATPL subjects. I was wondering if my experience was enough to land a multi-engine turbine First Officer job (Metro,1900,etc) once I get the 500hrs multi?

Can anyway please give me some info???

Thank you very much

Hi 126.9

I wonder if it is worth the question but...I'd rather give it a try. Hopefully it is not another time-wasting-virus-carrying chain, so if there are chances for low-time recently rated JAA-FI with ( hopefully coming-soon) PC6 endorsement let me know.

PM just for the first contact, please

Finding a first job is almost like a ferrytale to me, but I'm sure there's one out there. At least I'm not critical demanding if it comes to a job. I don't care about money as long as I can cook my own meal :yuk: I'm 33 yo old and I'm holding a current jaa frz atpl mel-ir and faa cpl mel-ir (delta connection academy) with 350tt/100mel. I used to be a policeman in Amsterdam (NL).

I'm willing to pay for my add. (familiarisation) training and offer 1000 bucks for the lead which takes to the right seat (I hope this offer goes against the forum policy..)

Hope you guys can help me :ok: !

I'd really like to work in Africa... But I'm still learning about the situation...

What is the arrangement in different countries with foreign licenses... I hold Canadian licenses and don't want to hassle too much with conversions, are some countries easier than others?

Also how about some suggestions on countries/companies to start looking into. I am not really high time, about 1000 hours mostly ME IFR.

Finally is there a season when it is busiest? When most of the hiring takes place?

I know this is pretty general but any info is great. Thanks.

oompilot
7th Oct 2005, 01:38
Canadian, my experience, all foreigners come to Africa and think they know it all, are arrogant and develop an attitude that cannot be backed up by their miniscule skills. Stay where you are, I promise we don’t need you, and if you need us, we don’t need you. We have enough pilots here. By the way, off the subject. Reading the Russians record over the past few days I wonder if the PARCEL company still thinks them Russian AC are up to scratch. Another loss for the night fighters I think! Jokes on who, the foreigners flying in Africa or the well maintained AC in Africa to be used for the safe passage of parcels? Next joke please.

oompilot -

#1 Sounds like you're the arrogant one with an attitude.
#2 I don't need you, but looks like you need me to pump your ego. No doubt a result of your lack of skill or penis size or both.
#3 Why don't you show us how smart you are by contributing something positive.

Anyway I'm still interested, any info is great...

Hello everyboby!

I wonder if this would be the longest-living Pprune.com forum ever....I joined long time tima ago from a galaxy (Star wars junkies please note location...) far, far away!

Now the saga is (hopefully) completed but I wonder if anyone got good news from 126.9. A friend of mine went to Africa (Vic's falls) and told me they are looking for many pilots but life is doomed to be weird. At this point I say better than....nothing! I am not willing to take on anything if is not worth but I wish I had at least an hint...just to know how life could be for a while.

May the force be with you!

Take care

Well...the guy got fed up with flying since he could not get a job in EU.He's there for a short holiday so I might have had the wrong impression (and attitude...) towards the lifestyle of a pilot down there. I don't know much more but today I watched a video on Gabon express folks and I would love to do it...! I am sick of hearing people complaining because the TR didn't get a job or worse. Back to my question. did anyone got a chance by 126.9?

Take care

Lots of companies in SA looking for rated King Air and 1900 pilots. One has no glamour machines on one's licence, thus one is still knocking on doors...:(

For those of you looking, there are some posiblities in Tanzania for pilots of various experience. As of late several companies have expanded their fleets. Many local pilots have moved up from the general aviation scence and onto the local airlines leaving a shortage. Most new locally trained pilots have also been absobed directly into the local airlines. And since the international market has been growing again several of the more experienced expats have moved on.

Basicly anyone intrested in coming here would need to show up and convert their liscence, which usually takes about a month. ICAO liscences re easily converted here.

There are jobs for the low time guys with 300-600 hours. They will most likely get jobs on 206 type aircraft. Guys with 600-1200 hours can look for FO jobs on twin otters. They would also be able to get onto 402's and Seneca's. Guys with 1200-2000 hours would be looking at the 402's and 404's. Guys with 1500+ could be looking at C208 jobs.

So a little for everyone, but only the dedicated need apply, it can be a bit of drag getting through all the processes and getting that first interview, you really need to come here and slog it out. Salaries range from Appaling to very resonable and some companies provide housing etc..

Remeber Vans are flown single crew here and the strips are rough, this is why the hours are sometimes higher than down south, Once your out of the major towns your pretty much on your own. So no mama's boy's need apply you'll only run home crying :E

Anyone intrested in coming out here give me a PM and I'll point you in the right direction. Let me know what your kind of job and life your looking for and what your expectations are and I'll try to point you in right direction.

Good luck all. :ok:

You'll find a lot of positions are filled by folks who were put onto something by word of mouth. This way the employers know what's available and on the market. Might not be much but at least it's something more positive than complaining about foreigners stealing jobs on other threads.:ok:

I understand that there are some great jobs available in Africa for low hour pilots and am just wondering if anyone has any info or pointers on how I can aquire one. I understand that the only way is to just turn up with CV and licence and hope for the best but I am unsure as to where to go, what companies are out there, and well anything that will help my search!!

I have both JAA and FAA licenses and 300 hours TT plus a 737 type rating.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

B Sousa
14th Feb 2006, 01:11
300 hours TT and a 737 Type rating???
You must have moe than enough money that you dont need a job. Buy a Plane and charter it out becuase I certainly have not heard of anyone hiring a 300 hour 737 driver.......... Maybe, just maybe 3000 hours.
300 hours in a C206 sounds better.

Shrike200
14th Feb 2006, 05:49
I'm not quite sure what expectations you might have Snake80, but Mr Sousa is correct. Africa doesn't really work along the lines of Europe where (it seems) there isn't really a middle ground in terms of flying jobs, ie there isn't much in the way of general aviation, so people tend to end up on an airliner with that experience. There isn't that much here either, but you would be expected to step something along the lines of: C206/Van (Maun etc), Baron/Kingair (Contract, wherever), 1900 (contract, wherever, Solenta, NAC et al), Regional airline (possibly smaller jet), Jet (80+ seats). Something like that at least. I have never heard of anybody getting a medium passenger (20+ seats) jet job in SA with 300 hrs, but I suppose it happens. Sorry, that wasn't very artfully worded, but anyway.

If you want to fly out in Africa, see the continent (which is beautiful), are able to shoulder the responsibility of operating far from home with corresponding difficulties with support, and can operate away from family/home for 1-2 months at a time, then come try down here. You get to do things you would never dream of seeing in an airline environment in Europe (meant in both the good and the bad sense!), and it's great life experience and plenty of flying experience too!

Thats only my experience of contract flying, others may differ. But I would bet it won't involve a 737!

Any possibilities of employment in Tanzania for ops controllers? Specifically helicopter ops, but I'm willing and able to learn about fixed wing ops as well. I'm based in Johannesburg at the moment, but I may be moving to Dar-Es-Salaam later this year.

What other options do I have? I love the aviation sector, it's become part of my life and I really don't want to leave it. :{

just asking the question that's been asked a few times already but no answers as far as i can see. Has anybody actually got a job from posting on this thread? and do people who post on here (from outside of Africa) really think that someone is going to hire them with all the hassels that go along with work permits etc associated with working in Africa with out them making the effort to even come out to Africa? What employer is going to hire someone who's unlikely to stick around and be able to operate in an enviroment that is TOTALY alien to them?

4HolerPoler
7th Aug 2006, 11:34
Well, from personal experience, when we needed two pilots a few years ago I sifted through this thread looking for appropriately type-rated guys and emailed or PM'd all of them - the biggest problem was that the great majority of them hadn't updated their details or, most importantly, their contact details.

It's just another line in the job-pond but if you don't have a baited hook in the water you're never going to catch one.

Ingwe
7th Aug 2006, 11:41
Thanks 4HP

I understand the need for hooks in the water but do think it is a VERY long short especially as a lot of guys very low time. It's difficult enough getting your first job when you live here let alone posting from out side the region. If an employer was going to employ it would be a big gamble in my eyes.

:hmm:

There is no need for those who post here to be so downhearted. Of course it is a long shot but then; what on earth else in aviation is not?
I have been contacted through Pprune pages in connection with a 737 direct command in ZA. It didn't work out but that was due to circumstance.
I think that quite a lot of people read through these pages from time to time.
I would follow the advice just suggested and keep contacts updated. Furthermore; I would be disinclined to treat these pages as an excercise in scribbled uselessness. I would make sure that my short resumé was as succinct and accurate as possible. Speaking from personal experience, at least two of my previous flying jobs have come about because I was at the other end of a telephone when the Chief Pilot called - as he worked his merry way down his list!:)
