Does anyone know where you can download local aviation charts from the net for free ?

Assuming you mean the UK when you say "local", try www.ais.org.uk (http://www.ais.org.uk)

You will need to register, but it is free.

There isn't anywhere you can download the CAA printed charts. You can download aerodrome diagrams, and instrument approach plates, from the AIS website, but to date nobody in the CAA ivory tower has felt that downloadable charts would benefit pilots...

To be fair to the CAA, I am not aware of any other European country whose official charts can be downloaded.

But what about Jepp? Don't they do something (pricey) with theirs?

Prob is that while the aeronautical data belongs to the CAA the base map is copyright Ordnance Survey. You can certainly get the charts in electronic form but they are around 50 quid each with no update option - just buy another when the new one comes out.

See here (http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/media/news/2001/march/centrica.html) for the reason why OS guard their copyright - 20 million is big bucks.

See here (http://www.memory-map.co.uk/maps_uk_intheair.htm) if yopu really want an electronic chart.

Alternatively buy NavBox Pro here (http://www.navbox.nl/)
