PPL Renewal/Revalidation

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what I have to do to keep my PPL valid.

I think it's something like 12 hours per year, I have checked the CAA website but there is no mention of it.

Would be grateful if anyone could help.

p.s. many people seem to struggle with the CAA site. Once you realise that all the legislation for GA pilots in filed under the safety tab, it gets easier. The other useful area is the aeronautical charts section, under airspace .

Just to sum up:

The starting point is your licence is valid for two years as long as you fly solo, and as long as your medical is current.

If you want to carry passengers you must have completed three take offs and landings within the last 90 days.

If you want to renew your licence at the end of two years without a GFT you must have 12 hours in the last twelve months - of these 6 hours must be in command, one hour with a QFI signed in your log book, and 12 take offs and landings.

... and it is your rating (SEP (land) ) not the license that needs revalidating. The CAA license is valid for life, a JAA one for 10 years.

No, the JAR-FCL PPL(A) licence is only valid for 5, not 10 years. The Single Engine Piston (Land) Class Rating is re-validated, not 'renewed' so long as all requirements have been met and the licence rating validity page has been signed by an authorised examiner within the 2 year period. Alternatively, it may be re-validated by a Licence Proficiency Check flown with an authorised eaxminer in the final 3 months of the 2 year period; it is mandatory to renew the rating in this way if the rating has expired. The training flight may only be flown with a 'Q'FI if it is in the course of military duties; civilians will normally fly with an authorised instructor such as a FI, FI(R) under the supervision of a FI, or with a CRI (e.g. a PFA coach).

There is no such thing as a 'GFT' for a JAR-FCL PPL(A).

By the way, what happens after the 5 years? I think I'll be approaching the 5 year mark in a year or two, so is it just a case of sending off another fee or is it more complicated than that?

Make sure you get the licence validity page signed within the two years. Some people have fulfilled all the requirements, and then forgotten to do that!!!

I've just checked. 71 quid to renew. At least I don't have to renew my CPL for another 4 years.

For what???

I think it is the CAA saying "We haven't had any money off you for a while, so give us 71 quid".

It serves no purpose as far as I can see apart from fulfilling the previous statement.

If the JAA had had their way it would be every year. The UK wanted 10 years, the compromise was 5 years!
