DETROIT (AP) — A man was restrained during a Northwest Airlines flight from Detroit to Honolulu on New Year's Day, officials said.

The man said he "needed to get to the cockpit," said Jennifer Marty, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Safety Administration.

He was restrained by a flight attendant and off-duty pilots and the cockpit remained secure during the incident, Marty said.

"The crew took care of the passenger, calmed him down and landed normally," she said.

The FBI is investigating the incident, and the man was taken into custody by local law-enforcement, said Thomas Becher, a spokesman for Northwest Airlines.

Becher would not say whether the flight had any extra security or air marshals.

The incident occurred near the end of flight 923, which landed around 7:30 p.m. EST. There were no further incidents and no one was injured, Becher said.

No details were available about the passenger or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
