Just a rumour at this stage, I have no concrete evidence, but the rumour is that during No3 engine start my maintainance crews, No3 caught fire. Crew pulled the bottles but with no effect, and had to evacuate. The fire was apprently put out by the ATL fire crew.

Has anyone got any other/concrete info at all?

Seems such a shame if this is true, to loose what is rapidly becoming a "unique" aircraft!

Just got some more info...

Apparently the engine fire resulted in a melted inboard aileron, parts of the inboard/outboard flaps, a destroyed wing root fairing aft of the wing and blistered windows the length of the airframe aft of the No3 engine.

Sounds bad.

Is anyone in ATL able to verify this?

Yep N802DE is a Delat airlines MD-11, with PW 4000 engines.

On an interesting note, try putting any US registered aircraft rego into google - you'll get an automated link to the FAA database, with all the relevant info.

See here (http://162.58.35.241/acdatabase/NNumSQL.asp?NNumbertxt=802DE)
