Hi All
On a recent evening visit to Farnborough, i noticed a large omnidirectional green light, at approx the mid point of the runway, flashing what seems to be a morse code message..
Can you anybody throw some light on what it is i saw and what it is used for..
Thanks

Maybe it was this Ryanair flight (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=110826) , doing the rounds of the South East.

zoink, it sounds like the aerodrome identification beacon. Have a look at this CAA document (http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/CAP168.pdf) and search for 'Identification Beacon'. Farnborough's IBN according to the AIP is "FH" ..-. ....
Or it could have been the mysterious Ryanair flight again.

For a minute there I thought Farnborough had got permission for a new runway :p
You most probably saw the Farnborough aerodrome beacon, which is an aid to identifying the airfield. Quite a few airfields still have them, I think the Farnborough one flashes "FH" in morse.

It is the aerodrome Identification beacon.
My office is directly opposite the field and as I sit and type this I can see it flashing.

Thanks to all.. Problem sorted
I do like that Ryanair thread... Bitchiness, moaning, conspiracy theories, very dodgy Irish accent impressions, stress, history lessons... Brilliant...
Thanks again! :)
