I remember some years ago an accident occurred after tape was used to cover the static ports of a B757/767(?) during a respray. The tape was not removed and subsequently missed by the crew. The aircraft got airborne for a short period and crashed.
If anyone can help me out with any details regarding this accident or supply a link to the accident report I would be very grateful. Cheers...

Have found this :-

Date: 10/02/1996
Location: Pasamayo, Peru
Airline: Aeroperu
Aircraft: Boeing 757-200
Registration: N52AW
Fatalities/No. Aboard: 70:70
Details: The aircraft crashed into the ocean 28 minutes after taking off from Lima, Peru. Pieces of adhesive tape were found covering the static ports, placed there by personnel during aircraft maintenance and cleaning, causing the malfunction of the airspeed indicators and altimeters. The crew was not able to correctly determine their altitude and airspeed and with no ground reference over water and at night, crashed into the ocean. An employee did not remove the adhesive tape from the static ports, nor was it detected by any number of people, including the captain, during the preflight inspection A maintenance worker was tried and convicted of negligent homicide for failing to remove the adhesive tape and received 2 years in jail.

The Aeroperu 757 was being washed when the tape was put over the ports. Cleaning supervisor was sentenced to a prison term. As for the walkaround, it was night, and the tape was silver in colour, like fuselage. Crew could easily have missed it.

Interesting thing was that many other a/c had port covers with red streamers supplied as standard by the manufacturer. But with Boeing, it was an "option".
