THE PHILIPPINE Airlines flight thought to have exploded and crashed in Davao City has landed safely Saturday night at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2, airport general manager Edgardo Manda said.

Manda however said the aircraft did encounter problems airborne at 2,500 feet when its engine "stalled," caused by a foreign object entering it. The loud explosion and "fireballs" residents witnessed from the aircraft occurred as the pilot restarted the engine and maintained its ascent, Manda added.

"This process of restarting the engine from stalling would cause loud noises and flames, which could have been mistaken for an explosion," Manda said over GMA Network radio station dzBB.

Manda reported that all 116 passengers of PR 816 were safe.

After reports of a plane explosion above the GSIS-Matina area reached INQ7.net, Philippine Airlines spokesperson Rolando Estabillo immediately denied reports that one of its aircraft had exploded and crashed.

Estabillo said that contrary to local radio reports that a PAL plane was seen exploding midair, the company's only scheduled flight from Davao, PR 816, for Saturday night had already reached 32,000 feet en route to Manila.
