Greece is about to enter the JAR-FCL 1 mars next year. This time I think it’s really going to happend because greece have already started issuing JAR-FCL ATPL licenses (for captain holding national ATPL license) and they also have set a computer test fascility for JAR-FCL examinations. The problem now for greek CPL/IR pilots that has no typerating in an aircraft is as followed:

To be able to take a typeraing in a multi-crew aircraft according to JAR-FCL 1.005 a pilot must have:

1) CPL/IR (instrument rating in an multi-engine aircraft)
2) 500 hours flighttime.
3) ATPL theory completed
4) MCC course

The fact is, that currently, Greece does not allow a person to take the ATPL theory unless he has 1500 hours and a typerating.
So when GREECE enters the JAR-FCL 1 mars, all pilots that do not have already a typerating will have to hit the books again and study for the JAR-FCL ATPL.

The thing that is really strange is that NOBODY at the HellenicCAA(YPA) knows anything about the JAR FCL table 1.005. This keeps me wondering, where are the Greek airlines going to find pilots? If Greece doesn’t do anything, Greek airlines are going to have a hard time finding pilots with the ATPL theory. They could offcorse hire pilots from other european country’s (until we get our ATPL theory) but which foreigner wants to work in greece with such bad salary and working conditions?

If it transpires the way you say, then market forces will come into play.

Supply v Demand as ever will apply, unless the YCA have a transitional phase to mitigate the impact.

Considereing that the YCA has the approval to issue JAR-FCL ATPL licenses, then in practice the YCA must be already following the JAR-FCL (I'm not totally sure of that, the JAA website doesn't say anything about Greece), and in theory there is therefore no obligation to have the 1500 hrs BEFORE you take the 14 ATPL written tests (ref. frozen ATPL). I'm sure you already knew that part, since you seem to be one of the very few guys in this solar system to have read the JAR.
:)

Greece has spend lots of euros to be JAA-compliant for the 2004 Olympics, taking the advice of expensive consultants and doing some "cleaning" among the operators.

Greece is transitioning from the former national rules to the JAA system. Why would they maintain this Greek "No-ATPL-written-test-with-less-than-1500hrs"-rule while they're follwing JAR-FCL ?

Are they following a mix of rules now or what ? It's not very clear to me... It sounds so "stupid" that I can hardly believe it !

its going to be fun to see what a "mess" JAR-FCL will cause to Greece. No one in greece has a clue about table 1.005

I don't understand really, why do I need a ATPL written to take a typerating. I'am going to fly as first officer not captain.
I think it was better the "old days". They say that the JAA will help us finding a job, yeah whatever. Its going to help pilots that already have a job to find a job with better salary not for us pilots that has not landed a job yet.

i consider this as even more evidence that CAA's, regardless of the country involved, think no further along than their next coffee break. but indeed the good ones might actually be planning where they will be having lunch, and give no consideration whatsoever about pilots.

somehow, real pilots must be able to get control of their relative country's CAA.

personally i have always wanted to fly in Greece after first coming there in a Herc in 1990.

such an interesting, energetic place.
