Lets hope the government can be upfront and honest enough to state that this country needs more runway capacity and get on with it, instead of messing about for five years holding a largely superfluous public enquiry to then announce what everyone knew in the first place. . .Whilst one can have sympathy for those who will be uprooted by such development, the prosperity of our industry and, by no small measure, our country has too come first.

Two excellent runways in the South East have been scrapped - at Upper Heyford and Greenham Common. Both had good infrastructure, neighbours who wouldn't have minded let's say 100 movements a day and could have done with the regional employment.

Why doesn't somebody investigate the possibility of building a civilian terminal at Brize Norton? Why do we have to always do things the hard way?

From one of the reports in The Indie

"Stansted, widely believed to be the favoured option for expansion, would have a second runway built to the south of the existing one, squeezed between the Essex villages of Takeley and Molehill Green.

"The landing area would cut between the terminal and access roads leading from the M11 and the A120"

This plan has been rumoured for some years and it is alleged that BAA has been buying farmland to the east of the terminal, near the two villages mentioned.

Anyone know more precise details about what is planned for STN?

The Brize idea's a good one.

What about Northolt....surely more use could be made of there. How about domestics into there, freeing up more room at Heathrow?

If I recall correctly, the Northold option has received strong support - from a limited number of folks!

It has a dual carriageway on it's doorstep (A40, leading to M40 less than three mile away. And the Tube is also there, less than one mile from the perimeter.

It has been suggested that the Heathrow Express have a branch put in for high speed connections to LHR and Paddington.

Domestics could use Northolt and pax never going into LHR, unless trasnferring.

The Royal Flight and military ops could continue to live there too.

Unfortunately, this idea makes sense so, obviously, it will be ignored

Northolt for domestics (plus LHR link) was discussed a while ago in this thread.
