U-P-S Plane Makes Emergency Landing at Sky Harbor

PHOENIX (AP) -- A UPS plane was diverted and made an emergency landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Tuesday night after the company received two threatening phone calls including one that mentioned a bomb, a company spokesman said.

The caller placed the first call to the company's 24-hour call center at about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday "saying that there was a dangerous package on board", said Mark Giuffre, public relations manager for UPS Airlines in Louisville, Ky.

The caller also provided a tracking number which allowed company officials to locate the package, the plane that it was on, the container that it was stored in and the location of that container on the aircraft, Giuffre said.

"Then a few minutes later, we received another call. The anonymous caller again gave the same tracking number. This time he said it was a bomb," Giuffre said.

Giuffre said that the company "takes these types of calls very seriously" which prompted the decision to land the aircraft.

Giuffre said that the 757 was en route from Los Angeles to Louisville, Ky. and had two crew members and one employee on board.

Jeanine L'Ecuyer, Sky Harbor spokeswoman, said that passenger flights and other operations at the airport are unaffected because the plane was removed to a secure area.

Members of the Phoenix police and fire departments are on the scene, she said.

Actually, a very interesting development. Now they are going after the cargo airlines also, wherease before, it was only passengers that counted.

All,

The aircraft was moved to a “remote location” on the airport, crew egressed out the windows (escape ropes). All OK.

Bomb squad would not inspect aircraft until after scheduled arrival time, in case there was a timing device involved.

Bottom line – after aircraft search, nothing found.
