A Melbourne-bound Qantas Boeing 737 carrying 108 passengers made an emergency landing at Christchurch International Airport on Sunday more than an hour after take-off.

Emergency services were on standby at the airport after mechanical difficulties forced Qantas Flight 36 to turn back to Christchurch late in the afternoon, after departing on schedule at 3.50pm (1.50pm AEST).

The plane landed safely back in Christchurch at 5.20pm (3.20pm AEST).

Most passengers were accommodated in Christchurch hotels over night and were to be put on flights to Melbourne on Monday.

A Qantas spokeswoman said the plane would stay in Christchurch overnight and be fitted with a new engine.

Last night's Melbourne-Christchurch flight was cancelled, with all passengers transferred to a Sydney-Christchurch flight.
