Re. the STN terminal extension and transformation project, what work has already been started on this, and what'll be coming up this year?

pabely 27th February 2025 17:11

Alert, the King has invited Trump back for another visit.
Expect the normal circus Northside!

I think it’s a visit to Scotland, not sure if it includes London or even England.

AirportPlanner1 27th February 2025 21:37

They are probably avoiding London after what happened last time - huge protests etc. The spotters of Stansted’s loss will probably be Prestwick’s gain

FRatSTN 27th February 2025 23:40

STN certainly doesn't want to host POTUS again out of choice, but it's not simply their choice to make. STN is just too busy a commercial airport now and it's too disruptive for them. Even if he were visiting London, somewhere like Brize should really be taking it.

BBC says "King Charles' letter proposed a meeting in Scotland, where Trump owns two golf courses, to discuss arrangements for a second state visit."
So I would say a Scottish visit & Full State visit later.
There is a summit of a dozen European Leaders this Sunday, including Ukraine, which should keep STN busy. Probably Northolt & Luton as well.

Sotonsean 28th February 2025 21:14

With regards to the upcoming state visit of the President of the United States 🇺🇸 to the United Kingdom.

If anyone actually saw the footage of Trump opening the letter presented by Starmer in the Oval Office, Trump was very impressed by the fact that it would be at Windsor, and he said so at the time.

So I should assume that the state visit or at least part of it will involve Windsor. This will inevitably affect STN. I can't imagine the official state visit being extended to Scotland. Although Trump may well visit Scotland on his own accord before he travels back to Washington. And this will more than likely involve PIK.

pabely 6th March 2025 17:12

With IndiGo starting services to MAN, you would think that would make STN more likely in the future.

VLCfkight 7th March 2025 09:39

Why should they consider STN? The SE already has numerous flights to the subcontinent whereas the the only way from the North is to use one of the ME airlines. Surely, this makes commersial sense.

SWBKCB 7th March 2025 10:04

I think the suggestion is in addition to, not instead of MAN. And the answer is the same as EK, a seperate market in it's own right and access - not the same slot issues as elsewhere.

I comes coming from the fact MAG own both airports. With India seeing a massive explosion of new airports and new airliners arriving then both markets will demand multiple existing and new destinations into India with the fast growing middle classes with wealth wanting to come to UK to work & play.

I've never understood while they don't use Mildenhall (or Lakenheath). It's hardly a lot further to the city in a helicopter

Although it will be flooded by secret service personnel there will be a big presence of UK Police & Security as well. US Air bases probably don't want to give them access to those military facilities.

Emirates

The refurbished 777s are coming to STN

It’s a STATE visit surely imho that means arrival via the Royal Terminal at Heathrow for meet and greet. Especially as it’s supposedly to be held at Windsor. The dooms day 747 will go to Mildenhall as usual , and numerous C17s to BZZ, MHZ NHT ,and even Stanstead with various back up and support team flyers .

Apologies for thread drift, but this comes up quite a lot in terms of groups that own a number of airports (so not just MAG). Just curious, but is this a "thing", that airlines are influenced to operate across a groups airports?

Rutan16 8th March 2025 09:28

MAG Group was actually reprimanded I little while back for bait and switch albeit reference to freight in the main . The separate divisions are expected to compete and not collude ( indeed that’s criminal in competition law)

Last years Japanese State visit included arrival & departure via Stansted. The last time the sitting US President visited the Queen it was via Stansted as well.
Any airspace closure or restrictions would be far more disruptive at LHR.

PAXboy 8th March 2025 16:58

It will be STN as they have a 10,000ft / 3050m runway and secure access on the far side to the terminal. This is where they direct any aircraft that has lost comms.
