Why would there be higher yields at GLA than PIK for FR- it would essentially be the same punters but them just going up the road I was through Barcelona (El-Prat) at the weekend and Ryanair have a base there where they even use *shock horror disbelief* !.....airbridges. The game is changing. btw they maintain a base at Girona as well. |

Wasn't the airbridge issue the subject of a legal dispute between Ryanair and AENA (the Spanish airport operator). Ryanair didn't want to use airbridges but AENA insisted, and won the dispute. So maybe Ryanair are only using them under duress....

Yes, and rather than stay only at Girona, Ryanair have agreed to change the way that they usually work and are also paying to use a rather nice terminal with proper facilities. Hence the previous focus on low cost at all costs is maturing as they go after other markets. Whether they end up being competitive or complimentary is still not clear IMHO.

Yes, it is encouraging that Ryanair now seem to look at the bigger picture, rather than throwing their toys out of their pram. They seem chastened by easyJet's apparent success in more closely meeting their customers' interests.
Perhaps there is indeed some evidence that passengers take other factors into account beyond simply the price. If so, I don't think that augurs well for the future of Ryanair's operation at PIK, if there is increasing competition from GLA and EDI under rejuvenated management. |

Press conferences in Edinburgh and Glasgow tomorrow, let's hope for a PIK/GLA combo, it can be and has been done quite succesfully elsewhere.

Rumour is as thought in that some inwards to GLA but surprisingly (if true) the return of PIK - STN

The obsession of many people, particularly local politicians, with having "London links" is so great that I could see many of them being willing to overlook the loss of several other FR routes if they were thrown the bone of a 2-3 daily PIK-STN. I'm interested to see how FR would be persuaded to do it though, I thought APD made most domestics a no-go for them?

Last I heard there was an insistence by Glasgow Airport management that Ryanair avoided routes already served by EasyJet and Jet2.
SNP involvement in PIK might have tipped the GLA scales and put the popular routes served by Jet2 and Easyjet in jeopardy. |
Well, perhaps against all realism, I'm wondering if Ryanair will announce they're consolidating some/all their Scottish flights at PIK. I guess their handling costs must be rock-bottom there, and cannot otherwise understand why they're holding simultaneous press conferences at GLA and Edinburgh..... but then risk losing their EDI traffic?

Let's be honest here, a fair percentage of those RYR pax using EDI are probably arriving at a destination 35 miles away from where they actually want to be, Greater Glasgow

It will be business orientated routes ex GLA, with the more sun orientated routes ex PIK, that would make sense I'd suggest. Be interesting to see how edi are impacted . No doubt a play off between edi and GLA was part of the formula .
If STN PIK does return it would be a surprise though the market has changed since they did axe the route ... Dub GLA has always been almost irresistible given EIR success on same ... |
Would be somewhat surprised if FR were to cut back in EDI in favour of GLA.
Some of you say that GLA could have the city routes and PIK have the leisure or "bucket and spade" routes. That would make sense but the way it usually seems is that EDI has the city routes and GLA has the bucket and spade because Edinburgh is generally perceived to be a much bigger inbound market. That seems to be the case with FR's current offering in Scotland with the exception of using PIK rather than GLA. Do we know for certain that FR will even open a base in GLA? What if it's just a series of new routes without a base or even if they are just announcing new routes from EDI and PIK but holding a press conference in their respective cities (that's if you consider PIK as Glasgow)? |

So aiming hard to hurt EIR again ... And erosion of EZY position at STN . They've never had much interest in domestic services ofuch scale in the uk outside of previously operated PIK STN , BLK STN , NQY STN and BOU PIK ... If they are going to do GLA STN surely edi STN wouldn't be far behind ...

It did cross my mind. I do think FR are in a very good position this winter to start GLA and EDI routes to STN given EZY's ever weaker position at STN.
EZY will be down to just 12 weekly on STN - GLA this winter, FR could quite easily take the majority on this route overnight if they wanted. I say that as it would seem EZY wouldn't be the slightest bit interested in increasing flights at STN... or GLA come to think of it. |
