Time to go back to the EDI thread Joe. The thread keeps drifting away from PIK matters.

Joe Curry 31st January 2013 21:22

Go to one of the main shopping streets in Glasgow on Saturday and ask Joe Bloggs which airport is easiest for him to use.
And if the same question were posed in Edinburgh/Poland/Hungary?

Joe Curry 31st January 2013 21:26

Imagine a business securing business and airports poaching from other airports.
Easy Peasy, GLA!

Check back for the culprits?

CabinCrewe 31st January 2013 21:54

The Canadian flights I refer to operated long after categorisation was dropped. I referred nowhere to AC at EDI. Read the post again.
Perhaps you can share your info on the "success" of the TS route ex EDI ? Fact or your surmise ?

Joe this is way off the PIK topic, and yet again you (completely wrongly) assume that the airport decide where an aircraft goes, and the airline have virtually nothing to do with it. I have it on pretty good authority (to answer your off topic point) that TS focused on Glasgow BECAUSE IT WAS A COMMERCIAL DECISION TO CONCENTRATE ON ONE AIRPORT FOR SCOTLAND. Not my quote in capitals, those of a company representative.

Will you accept that?

Skipness One Echo 1st February 2013 00:00

For the record TS have also dropped NCL and EXT as they continue to retrench.
I remember when they dropped PIK, I had a day off school as it was the October holiday. I also have slides somewhere as it was my first year with my dad's old camera.

Times have changed and there is a fine line between remembering the lessons of the past and just banging on about it.

Dear God it was 21 and a bit years ago when that last TriStar left(!)

How many based B738s will FR have for the summer?

Yes, this is my point to Cabin Crewe. Presumably he can't be too optimistic for the DUS and SNN routes that are to be re-instated at GLA this year if he is constantly and rigidly going to judge recent developments in Scottish aviation on what has happened in the past, under different circumstances.

OntimeexceptACARS 1st February 2013 08:06

Back on topic, the other big worry for PIK over the next year or two is the reduction in trooping flights, as the US reduces its presence in the Middle East. Certainly averaged out at more than one flight daily, even if just a tech stop.

ScotsSLF 1st February 2013 16:38

As regards US trooping flights by my understanding there haven't been very many (if any) trooping flights in ages. There are though a good number of US tech / fuel stops and training flights at PIK and usually on a daily basis. The equipment is very varied as well by all accounts. The US will still keep an eye on the Middle East and whilst not sending troops as such will still no doubt send 'supplies' to bases in Germany and Turkey so I would expect present US activity at PIK to stay constant for some time - unless the competition (e.g Shannon) lures them away.

Four, but will be others obviously flying in from other bases at times.

I've never understood why the US military flights use Prestwick instead of Mildenhall or Lakenheath; both have shorter runways but surely that's not the issue. Perhaps it's the aviation equivalent of the 'right of way' act.

willy wombat 1st February 2013 19:59

I'm surprised that Joe Curry hasn't been on here (or the EDI thread) crowing about EDI's great win of a twice daily Oxford service. I'd be willing to make a prediction about the future of that service too.

CabinCrewe 1st February 2013 22:35

Crowing indeed ! I think as everyone knows the outcome of that particular venture, is perhaps the reason its perhaps being kept a low profile ;)
Greek sublease offering business class style service starting next month but as yet unbookable.... yeah good luck with that one.

Military Airlift Command used to have a C-141 every second day from 437MAW supplying the US Navy base at Dunoon, on the back of that a strong relationship was built, alongside that of the Canadian Armed Forces. THose relationships were kept warm and maintained when the US retrenched post Cold War and PIK remains a transit stop for KC10s, KC135s and C130s amongst others. This a credit to hard work from both Greer Aviation and previously Ocean Sky and Prestwick Handling.
This is no way related to playing golf on a layover. Really. Honestly.

Any news on the sale of prestwick

Sunsetrep 11th February 2013 17:45

Infratil have been the opposit of aggressive in marketing in the last few years - often not sending a team to the main industry events. The entire team are lacklasture, not interested and seem to have zero motivation from the top - which is a shame as there are a number of excellent people there hamstrung and demotivated by the owners and management.

As an outgoing tennant of the airport we have heard nothing on potential new ownership - if we had then we and others would maybe be thinking twice!

The situation at PIK was also helped by the reluctance of the Base Commander at Mildenhall some years ago to facilitate transit stops as other operations were more important.
