Dewar with a good deal more freedom to take the kinds of decisions he was evidently not at liberty to take when he was under BAA's thumb (see his very revealing quotes on the matter in the article). Sounds like a new era to me.

Air France at EDI
Heard that AFR mainline have been subbing, using A319s, on the evning AF5052/3 service at EDI due to strike action at Cityjet. Anyone know what the dispute is about?

Weren't some of these announced ages ago ? I seem to remember being able to book SSH from EDI in the past, so im not sure its officially a "new route".

Thomson dropped EDI-SSH following last year's uprising, and are re-instating it next year

Another airport rail link hits the buffers.

This is disappointing but there have had to be cutbacks in most public sector budgets so it's not surprising that EGIP has had to be scaled back too given the economic problems the country is currently suffering from.
The original plans for EGIP were perhaps over-ambitious in some respects. Four trains an hour between Edinburgh and Glasgow should be more than enough. The six trains per hour became necessary because of the restricted platform length at Glasgow Queen Street. The redesign of Glasgow Queen Street will allow longer trains so the increase in passenger numbers can now be accommodated by longer trains rather than more frequent ones. This, together with a 10 minute reduction in journey time (instead of a 15 minute reduction) substantially reduces the need for many other infrastructure changes along the route. Although the Dalmeny chord that would have allowed trains from the west to access Edinburgh Gateway station, a cheaper solution is to stop some Edinburgh - Glasgow trains at Edinburgh Park which also has a tram link to the airport. The extra £300m would have;

Edinburgh Airport has lost 3 major surface access projects since devolution, firstly the Barnton bypass, then EARL and now the Dalmeny Chord. These projects would have been delivered by the UK government if transport and railways had not been devolved. Transport priorities in Scotland have skewed toward tribal rather than logical?
|
Don't really know enough about Scottish politics to comment, but somewhat surprised that EDI had three major projects to lose in the first place - it's not exactly stuck in the middle of nowhere!

it's not exactly stuck in the middle of nowhere! location well over 3 decades ago? |

Yawn. The roads and roundabouts work fine when compared to similar, that is why they have been unchanged. The access roads to EDI are horrendous at the best of times. I worked at EDI up until a few months ago and even on an average day (no highland show, no big even in central Edinburgh, no pandas, no road accidents) one could expect traffic to slow to a crawling pace and a journey time of 20 minutes to get from the long stay car park to the newbridge roundabout was not unheard of in some cases. The access to EDI is decades behind the traffic levels and something should have been done about it ages ago. Having separate, dedicated access to/from the M8 for the airport and a separate road for the showground is just one thing that they should have built by now. |
Quite correct, edi_local. Unfortunately talk of investing in EDI often causes some commentators, invariably from certain geographic biases, to froth at the mouth in indignation.
The good news is that rail access to EDI will still be possible from Edinburgh itself, plus Fife, Dundee, Perth, Aberdeen and Inverness, so the Gateway Station is not a wasted project. Access from West Lothian, Falkirk, Stirling, Glasgow is still possible via Edinburgh Park station, which will be connected to the tram network. The recent tail-backs and chaos during the Royal Highland Show demonstrated how EDI's surface access strategy really does need to be urgently re-examined. It's simply not good enough for an airport of EDI's size and growing stature. Hopefully GIP will co-operate with the authorities as far as possible to rectify the situation. |
".....dedicated access to/from the M8 for the airport......." It's a mile or thereabouts from the M8 to the roundabout at the Hilton, if GIP want an access let them pay for it, not the long suffering Scottish Taxpayer (EARL,Trams etc). |
... M74, Commonwealth Games ...?
Point proven, I feel. :ugh: |

I highly object to that statement. Its odd that these sort of comments are only ever made by the same commentators in this and only this thread. Funny that. The feelings in here of constantly being owed something is nauseating at most. |
I highly object to that statement. It's odd that objections to suggestions of investment in EDI's infrastructure are only ever made by the same old characters, and only in this thread. The relentless negativity, nay paranoia, displayed by the same old 'contributors' towards EDI is beyond nauseating.

Time for LFT/Cabin Crewe to kindly put a sock in it, please .... nobody from any other postcode area of the UK seems to object to the idea that Edinburgh International Airport should be better than it currently is, so please dispense with the whingeing and whining.
At the very least EDI needs an access road from the Gogar roundabout. Ideally something to connect it to the Forth Bridge too. Only befitting the nation's premier international gateway, indeed. |
