Good News for the Star Alliance......
Good News for the Star Alliance is bad news for UAL Pilots....
UAL is parking in the desert 44 747-400s, 17 767's, 5 757's... Look for another 1200 or so pilots out the door..... Tilton (CEO) said United will maintain its presence in the Pacific with Star Alliance Partners...... Well on the way to being a Virtual Airline in a Virtual World...... |
Recently, there were several UAL 744's for sale on the page below:
http://www.unitedsvcs.com/html/aircraft_avail.html They have suddenly disappeared... |
not sure
I don't know if that is good news for some Star Alliance members. I'd guess United gives up the not-so profitable routes. Looking at the Latin American members Varig and Mexicana (Source) I doubt that they are happy to take over the ex-united routes. Both airlines had lay-offs as far as I know.
I could be wrong of course. |
Australasia partners won't benefit!
United also plan to get out of their NZ routes from 31 March (and guessing that they are also quitting Australia). Air NZ don't have the capacity to pick up any spare LAX passengers, so Qantas and OneWorld must be laughing. Perhaps Singapore Airlines will benefit for those heading to Europe, but it opens the door for others to nab to Aussie - US routes.

So, is 44 747's the entire fleet, and don't they own most of them owned rather than leased? I'd imagine that any of the carriers who don't have the capacity to pick up on the lost UAL routes would be able to get a VERY good deal on some of the retirees.
Also looks like the proposed sale of 7 of them to Thai has fallen through because Thailand apparently don't agree with the situation between the US and Iraq. |
Anti Skid
I thought I saw in Dunnunda that NZ were actually putting on extra capacity per week AKL-LAX - maybe not full capacity but they are having a go at it. Let's see if I can find it... [clickedy] http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthr...threadid=77693 14th Feb. NZ go from 14 to 17. |
