Im surprised anyone wants to travel just now. Miserable.

Miserable indeed. Bought a fast pass to get over the worst this weekend.

People travel though for the destination, not the plane ride or the airport experience. As miserable as 3 hours in a queue is, the reward of 2 weeks in the sun I’m sure makes it worth it for the vast majority,

Leeds management been slated in all the papers today.

Wife and daughter flew out to Tenerife yesterday. Thought it wouldn't be too bad being an afternoon flight at a relatively quiet part of the day but they still had a 90 minute queue to get through security. Apparently only one body scanner in use. Sent several pictures of the passengers queueing out into the car park. Jet2 just as bad-no cups of tea available on the flight.

MME4eva 8th May 2022 11:26

On an unrelated note does anyone have any inside knowledge if the Jet2 Nice route will return in 2023? A once popular route now only once weekly in 2022!

davidjohnson6 15th May 2022 09:56

LBA has been in the news recently around lengthy queues for pre-flight security screening. The airport website suggests arriving 2 or 3 hours in advance. Those flying to southern Europe for a week on the beach might put up with this.
How does it work however for those flying with flyBE to London ? It seems like it would utterly scare off any potential pax into taking the train instead.
If flyBE see lousy loads for more than a month, somebody will wonder if linking Leeds to Heathrow is perhaps not a good idea. I struggle to believe that a route to a major hub should be sacrificed in order to add flights to the beach

Queues are in nobody's best interest - least of all the airport (whether LBA or anywhere else) regardless of where those people are flying to. Airports make money from passenger spend in the terminal. Time spent in queues means less time in those shops restaurants and bars. Flights to the beach have more passengers so more money making opportunities (particularly the once a year family holidays or groups.) A London route is often seen as a "jewel in the crown" but business travellers buying a coffee if you are lucky arguably don't add much to the bottom line.
If codeshares are developed, I wonder if the route is more likely to attract connecting traffic rather than P2P business traffic. The train offers a more frequent alternative to central London (of course not all businesses are in central London.)

brian_dromey 15th May 2022 11:30

If low loads and/or airport queues are a recurrent issue I guess LBIA and/or flyBe could work together to allow LHR passengers free fast-track access. LBA sell it for £3 with airport parking. I guess flyBe could have it for much less than that - maybe even free as part of a route support investment.

Can you expand on this arguement? Does a dozen people flying to LHR bring greater benefit to LBA than 180 going to Palma?

davidjohnson6 15th May 2022 16:14

LBA has a lot of outbound leisure-based routes, and relatively few to destinations which are likely to boost Yorkshire's economy or inward investment. As the major airport for Yorkshire, one has to take account of its role as critical infrastructure, rather than just as a piece of specialised land that brings in high retail rental
The Leeds conurbation is the primary urban area for Yorkshire - a route to a major hub with the potential for boosting a region's potential connectivity to the wider world and two-way trade should be given as much help as possible for at least a year (e.g. Brian Dromey's suggestion of free fast track for those flying LBA-LHR until new security staff are in place so as to avoid scaring off pax with 2 hour queues and give the route every chance to succeed).... or the people of Yorkshire are taking a highly short-termist preference of jam today, and ignoring the question of how they will pay for jam tomorrow

SWBKCB 15th May 2022 16:27

The people of Yorkshire might want get their hands in the their pockets then.

As for the critical infrastructure bit, Newcastle has multiple daily links to London, Amsterdam and Paris, as well as a Dubai link. I know whose regional growth rate over the last 10 years I'd rather have.

LTNman 15th May 2022 17:02

I put the following link on the Flybe thread but it is also appropriate here where security took longer than the flight. Noted that the aircraft was almost empty but then passengers but have missed their flight.

IPS Airways to operate to Pakistan non-stop from August, 3x per week to Islamabad. Apparently using an A330 non-stop. There are questions on the EMA thread about the viability of this operation - a £100 company with no assets and no licences.
Not one to be giving hard-earned cash to!

With the announcement of all the Summer 2023 City Breaks now on sale, it looks as if Nice has been dropped from LBA.
Am really surprised given the loads and the high prices for the rest of this summer.

LBA-LHR

Flybe’s LBA-LHR service appears to be going down to six services a week from 11th July. Just a morning rotation on sale..

2Planks 18th Jul 2022 09:25

Any signs of reduced loads or fuels stops this afternoon or tomorrow thanks to the heat?

None that I'm aware of. Fairly light winds but all afternoon departures have used RW14 on account of the greater TODA or TORA, whichever it is.

Sadly, this route has now been entirely scrapped.

Since it was apparently for the most part carrying little more than thin air that is hardly surprising!
