The energy will be provided, many reports have looked into this.

A modern high speed train uses less energy than a Pendelino, no one expect those opposed to the plan consider this to be an issue in 10 years when it opens.

How do you suggest we reduce the demand for travel?

The world over shows that as economies grow as does the demand for (rail) travel.

Take South Korea for example.

Fastest broadband on the planet.

Vast amounts of home working and video conferencing

Yet rail travel is going through the roof and they're massively expanding their high speed rail network

We either acknowledge that growing economies will lead to more travel or we somehow hope that the UK is unique and for some reason we can stop that growth in demand for rail travel despite all that we learn from our own history that is showing huge growth in demand for rail travel and internationally where this is mirrored.

The reason your Radio 2 travel report is as it is shows precisely why HS2 is being build, we've not invested in infrastructure in this country in the manner required so we've crap motorways, crap railways and crap airports.

Not addressing those issues simply ensures things never get better.

HS2 goes a long way to addressing the issues on the railway in London, Birmingham and Manchester.

It`s like when paperless offices came in, the computer system crashes and the whole office
came to a standstill and when a navvy put a spade throughthe power lines outside everything ground to a halt so guess what, all the accounts were printed off twice a day on paper and stored, but of course even if there was 1 line on the page it was printed.
It`s is never as easy as promised and people need to meet face to face.

How will the energy be provided?

We have no coal-mines, yet Drax, Retcliffe, Fiddlers and Ferrybridge still need feeding.

Many of our nuclear plants are at the end of their lives. Replacements take years to build.

Fusion is still way in the future.

What do we do in 25 years or so when all the nice fracking gas runs out?

Renewables.....Wind and solar......Great, but, - how do you deal with a month-long blocking anticylone.......In the winter......At night?

'Peak Oil'.....When supplies start to decline, how will the moving-parts of HS2/3 etc be lubricated?

Manchester Kurt 16th Jul 2016 22:01

There is a large wire under the channel to France

We can buy from them if all else fails

However, HS2 is just one very small extra demand on electricity.

Do you post opposition to Crossrail, Thameslink, Metrolink, GWR and MML electrification etc?

Reality is the government have set upon electrifying the railways and are confident on providing the power.

Be it from the French nuclear power stations or from power stations in the UK we'll get the power needed

You seem to have given up, not accepting we can improve our nations infrastructure and not looking for ways to improve it.

And now, back to Manchester Airport...

GrahamK 17th Jul 2016 07:53

The UA flight to IAD will now be suspended for the whole winter season as opposed to just Jan/Feb.

LAX_LHR 17th Jul 2016 07:57

UA news was covered on previous page, post 5575.

Apparently you could have put everybody on a F50 !

I was on the BA175 on July 3rd. Completely full, even up in First (me in 2K).

We can all throw anecdotal evidence to suit an argument...

Mr A Tis 17th Jul 2016 09:21

Far too much thread drift here.......:=:= Less train, tram, fuse boxes please.

Turkish Airlines

Apparently Turkish Airlines are asking MAN (plus no doubt a number of others) to do a stop for security screen en route to the U.S.

chaps1954 17th Jul 2016 12:59

Kuwaiti began stopping enroute to JFK in SNN for this reason last month.

Turkish have probably what, 20 odd 333/77W to the states each day? I doubt any single airport could handle that much extra footfall in security / widebody parking requirements really.

LAX_LHR 17th Jul 2016 14:09

Turkish are asking a few airports. Each airport will handle a certain amount of flights.

Apparently TK have asked for one of the JFK, Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago to route through MAN.

I believe DUB, CDG, AMS and SNN have all been asked too.

In the winter it wouldn't be a problem and for those that fly overnight to the US there wouldn't be an issue either but for those that are flying during the day capacity would be an issue there is a severe lack of wide-bodied stands at MAN but the expansion should sort this even though it would be late for TK

Would they want 5th freedom on the outbound leg? I assume that inbound to Turkey they will go non stop?

THY will undoubtedly be hoping that this will be a short-term issue only - weeks rather than years. So they're unlikely to be giving any thoughts to fifth freedom sales at this stage, especially on a one-way basis.

I haven't checked the THY timetable for specifics but would not expect a problem with this. Transatlantic flights departing from IST are highly unlikely to clash with MAN's overnight and early-morning stand congestion. Late morning and early afternoon timings should represent no problem at all for stands.

LAX_LHR 17th Jul 2016 14:51

There will be no 5th freedoms required. It's purely a screening stop only, nothing more.

It will all depend now where TK want to complete this screening, it may not be MAN after they decide what to do but thought I would give the heads up that they have at least requested MAN.

Bagso 17th Jul 2016 14:51

THY they overfly UK late Morning /early PM. Not a problem!

Una Due Tfc 17th Jul 2016 16:14

If they're not applying for fifth freedom or dropping anyone on the way then I would have thought PWK was ideal

LAX_LHR 17th Jul 2016 16:27

They want to do it through current out stations, in case there is a need for Crew HOTAC or swap using existing flights.
