Check-in unfortunately is where the airport is very short on space and as a result of the hefty growth of the airport over the last few years, they have had to cram checkin pods into every conceivable space. It doesnt look great but they dont really have any choice.

The new extension should include new baggage facilities which will hopefully allow a vastly expanded check-in area in turn in the location where the current baggage belts are.

These of course would be the entrance doors where they spent the summer dismantling the inner door and vestibule. Suggested to the check-in staff that this might be a little short-sighted come winter. Responses were deep sighs and a look of resignation

Is that because they charge nowt for airlines to use their facilities compared to their nearest rival who do charge airlines to use their facilities?

Charges are fairly minimal - id say the airport is flourishing under new aggressive owners and is realising its potential.

We just need som expanded facilities to cope with the growth.

I see Prague is going from 4 to 6 weekly from April. It seems to be quite a popular route, it's weird that the CSA service stopped and never came back.

inOban 2nd Dec 2016 20:04

But then, like several other Intercity routes, is cut back in 'peak' season!

Fairly minimal? I'd think again on that statement. Charges at EDI are quite significantly above GLA and are going up next summer, which is why Flybe are pulling their early morning EDI-BHD and operating from the BHD end.

I meant in the context of all the costs of setting up new routes - but then we were told above that EDI doesn't charge anything!

EDI will become a 738MAX base for Norwegian in mid 2017, base bidding open for EDI

willy wombat 3rd Dec 2016 17:43

Where will the Norwegian check-in be? In a tent outside the terminal?

There are already Norwegian flights from EDI so I'd reckon they've got it covered!

Flightrider 3rd Dec 2016 17:54

Yes, covered by a marquee. The situ is beyond ridiculous. This is an airport that has aspirations way beyond its capability to deliver, and the infrastructure cannae take any more.

Great stuff, any idea on initial size of base and if first MAX delivery is still expected Mayish?

CabinCrewe 3rd Dec 2016 18:38

I saw the Irish Norwegian transatlantic venture has been approved by US. The UK application remains a work in progress, but they must be more confident on the back of this.
One wonders the effect on existing legacy carrier offerings should Norwegian start offering peak summer discounted transatlantic seats as Im not convinced the market is truly unlimited even peak summer.

Good news, any idea on the routes? Is it just EWR and BOS?

Norwegian Air to launch low-cost Edinburgh-US routes in 2017 - Edinburgh Evening News

This was the chat some months ago pre Brexit.

“We will definitely fly to Boston, and San Francisco and New York could be others.”

It's just the original post said a 738 base but a Dreamliner will be needed for San Francisco.

canberra97 4th Dec 2016 16:54

Well they don't fly to San Francisco as it is rather Oakland but I would take that press release with a pinch of salt!

mwm991 4th Dec 2016 16:58

I don't see any west coast routes off the bat, it'll be BOS and/or EWR/JFK.

mwm991 4th Dec 2016 16:59

Think he merely meant the areas, i.e NYC or the Bay Area.

IMO give it a couple of years and they will try it out to the US West Coast.
