British Airways also fly from Dubai direct from Edinburgh, in this day and age, a direct ticket is well known to often involve a stop or aircraft change. it has never meant the same as non stop. Unless we know how many tickets have been gifted, there's no possible way of quantifying what impact it might have. Is it 1/10/1000/10,000/100,000?

What changed here was the realisation that the market was skewed towards leisure, something BA surely knew from their own GLA-LHR-US figures, and that with the coming of the alliances, there was no need for each member to serve each airport with their own metal. American used to have an enormous European network served with B767-200ERs, all gone in favour of one stop over LHR with BA/AA.Code sharing with STAR partner BMI was what allowed Air Canada to drop GLA-YYZ to seasonal then drop it completely. #progress I have never seen the point of Etihad full stop, like Qatar, it's a semi commercial arm of a far away gulf state. Their balance sheet runs on different rules from more traditional carriers.

I completely disagree. In no terms can Qatar Airways’ flights from Edinburgh to Dubai or Hong Kong be classed as “direct”. The only “direct” route Qatar offer from EGPH is to Doha, everything else is an onward connection. Sure you can book a through ticket to Dubai, Hong Kong and other destinations but under no interpretation or the word “direct” can changing flights at an intermediate point such as a hub airport be classed as a “direct” flight.

I for one would kindly suggest to IATA that they checkout the dictionary as that most certainly is not a correct definition of the word “direct”, and IATA as far as I’m aware, have as much right to change the dictionary as you or I.

IATA can claim what they wish, the fact is the word “direct” means “Extending or moving from one place to another without changing direction or stopping” and taken directly from the Oxford Dictionary: “there was no direct flight that day”…ie there was no direct flight from Edinburgh to Dubai that day.

If you fly on QR from EDI to anywhere except DOH, you will be issued with more than one flight coupon, even though they might be printable on one piece of paper. You will change flight numbers (and probably aircraft) in DOH, and under the IATA definition you are therefore on a connection (or transfer) flight.

Under IATA's definition of direct, the only direct flight on QR from EDI is to DOH, and it also happens to be nonstop.

Direct flights can have one or more stops on them. For example SIA offers a direct flight from MAN to SIN which has one flight number SQ327 and is ticketed on one coupon. However it stops in Munich, and is therefore a one-stop direct flight. Similarly BA offers a direct flight from LHR to SYD, which stops in Singapore.

Stepping back from the "direct" debate, Skipness O e, I'd be interested to know what you think is sustainable from Scotland as you usually seem quite well informed.

EDI will again have a Japanese charter flight, this time to/from Osaka, departing 02/07/14 and returning 09/07/14 on B777-200. I assume JAL again?

Also some interesting stuff on EDI and other UK airport efforts to secure direct flights to China:

The 'leg work' has been done, securing governmental approval for a Chinese flight to operate in and out of EDI. Its now down to specifics of which airline will operate, when it starts and where it will operate to although Bejing is tipped to be the destination.

I was under the impression that the UK-China bilateral agreement (which at present does not allow any more SCHEDULED flights between the two countries) needs to be re-negotiated before any UK airport (including LHR!) can have additional services to China. I therefore doubt that governmental approval has been given for regular scheduled flights into EDI from China, unless China has already recognised Scotland as independent from the UK.......charters, like those at BHX in July are however are perfectly possible right now

Can anyone tell me if the move of the bus stop for off-airport car parking is temporary during the work on the new security area?

I know it isn't that far, but on a wet and windy night it's not a pleasant trek. :bored:
