I say it again BHX is not considered a hub in the same sense that MAN are.

rutankrd 3rd Feb 2014 17:37

Definition of a Hub and Spoke operation-

Through fares interline and timetabled connections and re-bookings if the connection fails because of the airlines neglect !

Its a Hub and spoke operation !

By the way Southampton is also a FLYBE Hub.

The three are referred to by FLYBE themselves as HUBs in all reports

Cloud1 I am not sure what part you are denying or even what it is YOU consider necessary for an operation to be considered a Hub and Spoke .

Sure Easyjet and Ryan aren't.

Cloud1 3rd Feb 2014 21:31

It's a pretty pointless thing to argue over but I think the difference of opinion stems from the fact that we are not talking about a normal hub. We are discussing the "Flybe hub" and it is only MAN that is marketed and considered a hub. BHX and SOU are at present core airports. Your definition may stand if you are looking at any hub in its simplest terms but a marketed hub is a different thing.

Maybe we can agree to disagree and move on

Been looking at the new schedule and Monday the 19th May as an example shows 10 based aircraft operating as follows

06:25 CDG E195
06:40. BHD. E175
06:45. MXP. E175
06:50. ABZ. Q400
07:00. EDI. E175
07:00. DUS. E175
07:05. AMS. Q400
07:05. HAJ. E175
07:10. GLA. Q400
07:10. STR. E175

Quite a nice business looking schedule supported by leisure and business in the day time

Also the 10 listed doesn't tell the whole story as the Cologne departs at 10am and none of the based Q400's are back by then - is this an eleventh based or will it arrive from elsewhere? The Knock is operated by a IOM based aircraft as well and of course there is the DUS night-stopper crewed from the BHX base.

legalize - the rumour is the one beginning with M.

SAS - Blue 1 have started operating the morning Copenhagen at least fror February. Very early yet but the 320 is listed on the evening service from late April although I have seen several different aircraft on the CPH for summer 14.

Cloud1 3rd Feb 2014 22:19

Not sure but there may be a Q400 that miss' out the early wave rotations to act as a spare or back up until the CGN. I will need to go through the schedule properly when I get some time but the connections timetable seems very accurate (more so than the standard!)

With regards to Monarch, I had been given the impression that Menzies were expecting to get much busier. I cannot imagine this was just based on the increase in BE flying so maybe the rumours you heard OP were correct.

That (+Ryanair) makes for a busy T2 - how many air bridges/walkable gates and how many bus gates are there in T2?

nigel osborne 4th Feb 2014 09:16

Insuindi.

There is just 1 terminal at BHX now. However the section you are talking about has 21 stands including 6 remotes which regularly load off.

Nigel

getonittt 4th Feb 2014 09:57

I don't think all can be used at the same time and some are not used at all. Airbridge stands are 1-4 (although RYR use stands 1-3 for parking) . 8R , and 14-16. stand 8L can also be used when 8R is occupied .I make it 18 stands on the former T2. To be honest it needs demolishing and rebuilt !

Hotel Tango 4th Feb 2014 10:01

:) I was just doing the maths as well. I didn't want to contradict Nigel because he's local and knows his stuff. Nevertheless, I made it 16 plus 6 remote. As you mention, getonittt, it also depends on aircraft size etc.

Italy from BHX

I have flown BHX -Bergamo on each of the last two years and each time loadings have appeared good and with a mixture of both UK and Italian passengers. This year Bergamo seems to have been dropped and replaced by Malpensa in the destinations list, or has it? Looking at June and July it is not possible to find flights to either airport.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

getonittt 4th Feb 2014 10:59

The runway is closed at BGY for repairs during a period in may/june and RYR will move the operation to MXP for this period . I don't think RYR have decided if they are going to keep the route for summer 2014 but have both in the drop down menu just in case.

FRatSTN 4th Feb 2014 11:23

East Midlands to Milan Bergamo is back up to 4x weekly for S14 (from only 3x weekly in S13), maybe they have dropped the Birmingham route.

Birmingham to Rzeszow appears to be ending in March as well, with funnily enough an extra flight per week from East Midlands.

Thanks for your update. It would be shame if RYR drop this route from BHX. Although i have no idea as to the yield it it was well supported on the occasions i have used it. Bergamo is such a beautiful city it is to be hoped that someone else will pick it up. Until then, it looks like it will have to be Pizza Express when i want a quatro formaggi...

nigel osborne 4th Feb 2014 18:05

Getonnit,

Yeah not seen much on 8C although it can take a 747.

BHX did look at refurbishing the old T2 but as you say it cannot be done, and BHX have said they cannot afford to demolish and restart it for some time.

Nigel

getonittt 4th Feb 2014 18:34

As the moment stands 5 , 10 , & 12 are not in use . There is no stand 9 but 8L & R can be used at the same time so it's 19 stands available including the 6 remotes. The press announcement said that the based fleet will be 12 aircraft so I think at weekends there maybe some aircraft on the 70's and of course over at the monarch hangar.

Fairdealfrank 4th Feb 2014 19:25

Rutankrd is incorrect - BHX is not a Flybe hub in the same sense that MAN is. Sure you can book through tickets but they all require you to go landside. I think BHX need to sort their transfer facilities first before they can have the same status as MAN and similar short connection times

International connections need to go land side even through Manchester and as i just said the Hub over Manchester is primarily a DOMESTIC operation.
Am shocked! Is it really true that there are no flight connections facilities at both BHX and MAN? Pretty sure that I've seen signs for "flight connections" in MAN-3 on my way to the exit.

It's truly difficult to believe, especially as both MAN and BHX aspire for longhaul flights from Asia which would undoubtly be carrying some pax wishing to transfer to other UK, Irish and European destinations.

Many of those pax may not be EEA citizens, and some of these would require visas to go landside to change planes. It smacks of the USA setup and just doesn't cut it!

Hotel Tango 4th Feb 2014 19:59

Fairdealfrank, there is a difference between international to international connections and international to domestic connections. As far as I can remember that always involved clearing imigration and customs prior to proceeding to the domestic departure gate via security again. Smaller airports with small numbers of hubbing pax will not provide special provision for this as, for instance Schiphol, where a large majority of pax are hubbing.

FLYBE CGN service

So, as I suspected (from the block times first mentioned some posts ago), the CGN is indeed a DHC-8 operation with the exception of Saturday. Even taking into consideration the attractive start-up fares I will personally stick to DUS with the better timings and the EWG/CRJ-900s or BEE/EMB-175s. Personally I'll only tollerate a turboprop over longer sectors when there's no other choice.
