BHX is suffering the UK national infrastructure disease, and has done since the day the new site was planned back in the 1970s. Namely, the UK designs for for yesterday, rarely for today and never for the future. That's why our road, rail and airport network is woefully inadequate, and streets behind much of what is in place in mainland Europe. Without being political, if you put infrastructure into the hands of profit making organisations (or organisations who's modus operandii is to return profit) the UK disease will proliferate. |

Another example is the M42. I'll never understand why they didn't build 3 lanes from the M5 through to the M1, instead of downgrading it to an A road past Tamworth.
There are countless other examples but we shouldn't to turn this thread into a topic on woeful UK infrastructure! |
The simple answer to the infrastructure woes is money......or lack of it..We always build to a price and tailor the job to fit..Always have and always will. Its a cultural mindset sort of thing

The three moving walkways that were u/s were between T1 and the station. I didn't venture to T2 however I know that at least two of them are broken as I looked through the doors. Furthermore, the escalator on the T3 car park is also not working as is the escalator from the platforms to the concourse in the station (this is probably the responsibility of Network Rail).
The two escalators in the station to the skylink were replaced a couple of months ago and now sound much healthier (and look smarter). OTIS seem pretty useless at repairing any of the equipment in the skylink. If they do fix it it will last for two days before its broken again... |
Travelled through terminal 2 on 03/05/17 at 07:00 and returned on 17/05 with no delays at all. Our bags even beat us to the carousel well done MAN. Travelling through terminal 1 early June so will report

BA Florence

Florence bookable to 25 November not sure if this was first planned or not but hopefully a good sign. I wonder if Malaga will get the same treatment especially with Vueling stopping their service although very different with FR, ZB and LS on the route and at once a week I am surprised when they announced it in the first place. The above is BHX just in case anyone is confused from the other posts today  |
Spice Jet looking at BHX in W17/18
The SpiceJet chairman says that they are looking at leasing two 787's by this winter, Birmingham is mentioned again. No destinations are suggested but he does go on to mentioned how busy Delhi and Mumbai are already.
By when do you plan to start those flights? We are looking at starting the service by this winter. Two Boeing 787 Dreamliners will be leased and we may fly to cities in the UK, like Birmingham or London, where we can look beyond Heathrow. A return fare of Rs 25,000-30,000 for these sectors will have great demand. |
Have to say that HT is spot on.
Flown to Graz the last 2 Mondays going through security at 06:00 and 12:00, both times the security queue was reaching back well into the food court, access to the airport is a joke - I know the work has to be done but the time of the year for doing the work is nuts - surely its winter, low(er) PAX volume work. Took my son + family yesterday (Sunday) and worse still at 11:30am 1hr 45 to get through security

All these new services are OK spotting wise but user wise they are creating chaos at the airport. As a regular off peak user of the airport I have recently discovered that there is no off peak period at Brum anymore! Fortunately (as a regular) I know a few little tricks that still just about enables me to make the whole process of using BHX tolerable. Nevertheless, the fact remains that the terminal is now too small for the number of passengers it handles. Of course the management will tell us otherwise but they wouldn't admit the truth would they!

Enjoyed my flight from AGP-BHX Saturday with BA, excellent leg room, and the cabin service was very good too, no food, but free bar and nibbles etc. Using them again in a couple of weeks. I'm concerned re Vueling, I like them and have flown several times with them from BHX and also within Spain, does this mean that the AGP-BHX service will be withdrawn?

I think the problem with Vueling is a combination of very limited awareness they fly these routes from BHX, the fact they are limited frequency and much better public awareness of ZB, FR and LS (is there an ad break on TV that doesn't have a Jet ad??!!). Shame as I have flown on all 3 routes rumoured for the chop and Vueling offer great in flight service etc. I have yet to be on a flight more than a third full, these sort of loads will simply not cut it these days.
In the same vein I'm also concerned about Norwegian - low frequency routes and perhaps less awareness by Joe Bloggs that they actually fly into BHX.... I have been told all BA flights on Sat went out with decent loads - I think there is scope for weekend flights through the winter and the fact FLR has been extended into Nov is promising but will BA survive on AGP etc. offering the same low frequencies as Vueling? I guess they will have appeal to Avios points gainers and spenders aswell as those who prefer the more intimate cabin on an Embraer compared to an A321 or 737 (I certainly prefer smaller aircraft). |
Gayfriendly, thanks for the reply, however my experience of Vueling there have mostly been much more pax than you appear to have had, my last flight BHX-BCN on 3 Apr was full. Vueling also code share with BA and IB both well known carriers. I agree with you in flight options and service are both very good, and they are a network carrier so you can check through for connecting flights far better than ZB, FR, LS etc.

Emirates
At least this brings the number seats back to where they were when they first added the third service on the 3 class and only just a bit lower than when it increased to 3x two class.
Also 615 x 31 days x 4 = 76260 seats which is still above the best monthly figure. In theory the passenger loss should be minimal but of course little room for growth without adding back the third flight and this could be some way off. GF - BA loads were fairly low on most of the 4 routes Saturday |
