How many International Airports are actually 'In Town'?

The definition of 'in town' being easy walking distance from the center.

Having spent so many hours in crew transport getting between the airport and town I just love it when we are in living in Maun. 'Drop me off in town please, I'm going to the airport'.

There must be many more but only Gibraltar comes instantly to mind.

The SSK 13th Jul 2012 08:25

The late, lamented Tempelhof was most certainly 'in town', although Berlin is a very big city. I suppose you could reasonably walk from there to the Brandenburg Gate or the Potsdamer Platz in an hour, for example.

Personally I've walked from Antwerp Airport to the city centre, in half an hour or so.

PhineasC 13th Jul 2012 08:29

LAX is in Los Angeles, if not the city then county and is completely surrounded by the urban area, however it almost impossible to walk anywhere in Southern California so I'm not sure it counts

Joe Curry 13th Jul 2012 08:30

I suppose it depends on what you describe as 'walking distance'. There aren't
many airports actually within town/city boundaries let alone connected by
town/city sidewalks. If you fancy a brisk 7 mile walk EDI would fit the bill.
There must be many more..just my tuppence worth.

davidjohnson6 13th Jul 2012 08:41

Bremen and Geneva airports are just over 2 miles from the city centre
La Rochelle airport is about 1.5 miles from the city centre
Dundee airport on the other hand is about 0.5 miles from the city centre

BHD2BFS 13th Jul 2012 10:24

Same with BHD

wawkrk 13th Jul 2012 11:30

London City?

Noxegon 13th Jul 2012 11:31

UIO is right in the middle of the city.

Groundloop 13th Jul 2012 11:42

Las Vegas - The executive jet area is virtually on the Strip.

Barling Magna 13th Jul 2012 11:47

Toronto City Airport; although it is international only in the sense of having flights to the USA as well as Canada....

Peter47 13th Jul 2012 14:04

Reykjavik is quite close (2.5 miles according to the OAG) although I suppose that most of the international traffic uses Keflavik.

Jippie 13th Jul 2012 14:35

Pisa! It's about 2,5km from the city centre, walking from the airport to leaning tower of Pisa, great:ok:

edi_local 13th Jul 2012 15:09

LCY is very close to most areas of East London and walkable, but around 7 or 8 miles from what most people would call the centre of London. BRE is less than 2 miles from the city centre and I believe it is possible to walk there.

PIK is 1 mile from the centre of the town of Prestwick, don't fancy the walk from Glasgow much though!

WHBM 13th Jul 2012 17:24

Living walking distance from LCY is always a topic of conversation when I visit clients for the day and say I walked to the airport in the morning.

Once had a business meeting in the airport hotel across the car park at Dublin, and therefore walked at BOTH ends of the trip - that must be an unusual one.

jabird 13th Jul 2012 19:16

Think this one has done the rounds before (may have even started a thread on it myself).

I do remember reading a Guinness book of Records about the closest and furthest airports, and GVA was mentioned as the closest. I have walked there, but it still took me abut 50 minutes, and I got a lecture at the check in desk for arriving 40 seconds before it closed. "Mr J, vous devez completer le check in avant de fermeture"!

However, there are plenty of smaller airports, especially on islands - NEV is an easy walk to nearby beaches, first habitation up the hill from SAB overlooks the aircraft carrier strip, and of course given the reasons for most people here for visiting SXM, Maho is beach is naturally not far from the terminal!

If we're walking to a concert or exhibition, let's not forget BHX too.

BLL's Lego airport is very close, but I once went out the terminal and onto the awaiting bus, forgetting that my hotel was actually the one inside the terminal!

A taxi driver tried to charge me €50 to go from said leaning tower to PSA control tower, but I got the bus in the end, took about 5 minutes.

You could also ask which Ryanairports are closer to the city than the "proper" airport - that would include CIA, GSE and also IEV, although Ryanair don't go there yet.

The closest of the intercontinental major hub airports must surely be FRA?

escortmk2 13th Jul 2012 19:47

Corfu to the town center is about a 20/25 minute easy stroll.

Daza 13th Jul 2012 20:08

Airport close to city centres

As jabird has said island airports are often very close to island capitals Skiathos JSI comes to mind just a 5-10 minute walk to Skiathos town. :)

I reckon Boston is closer in. The downtown high-rises really light up the runway area at night.

Yes, very true. I spent three months in Quincy, and they were impressive from up there too! And you can take a water taxi into town, bonus for that :D

Except when I went back a few years ago, I flew there from MUC, not FRA!

Fairdealfrank 13th Jul 2012 21:45

DOH is only about a mile and half, although that will change with the new airport soon. Also BAH, just accross the bridge from Manama.

And SAN......

rareair 13th Jul 2012 21:51

LTN is very close to the town (LTN obv, not London).

Luton Borough Council don't have a residents parking scheme in the area very close to where you can get a free bus from the terminal.

Please don't change this ;)

jabird 14th Jul 2012 00:03

Hmm, nor does Solihull MBC in Hampton in Arden (3 mins on train), don't think they do around Marston Green either. Plenty of parking shuttle buses milling around there, but not sure if security would just let you walk in, probably not!

Concession pass holders wouldn't pay for the train anyway.

Would say Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) qualify to be called a city airport - with one single road with walkways, Promenade des Anglais, leading you the whole way from the city centre to the airport. It will be tough 3.6 mile long walk, but then you can enjoy the view of Mediterranean until you reach the end of the runways.

10 DME ARC 14th Jul 2012 12:27

DXB, could not get more 'in town'!

jabird 16th Jul 2012 00:17

And can still enjoy once inside the departure lounge :)

edi_local 16th Jul 2012 08:00

RKV, Reykjavik Domestic (which has flights to Greenland, so is international) is easy walking distance from the city centre, took me about 20 minutes. KEF, on the other hand...bit further away.

rouelan 16th Jul 2012 12:32

Biarritz (BIQ) is at walking distance (35 mns) from the city center and the "Grand Plage". The airport is actually closer to the city center than the railway station !

Now if we were to do airports which are closer to town than the railway station, then there might be a few of those - assuming the town has a railway station.

I'll start with SKB - it might only be a sugar train, but the "terminus" is adjacent to the RBIA terminal, both being about 40 mins from Basseterre.

Fairdealfrank 16th Jul 2012 21:50

2 more:

1. SDU
2. TSA

Charlie Roy 16th Jul 2012 23:12

Ostend-Bruges International airport is a 40 minute walk from the centre of Ostend, and less than 10 minutes walk from the beach ;)

IJM 17th Jul 2012 02:43

San Diego Airport is not too far from Downtown.

The SSK 17th Jul 2012 07:53

Ponta Delgada in the Azores, 2km/1.25 miles

And yes, it is a town (the largest in the islands). And the airport has intercontinental scheduled flights.

Ernest Lanc's 17th Jul 2012 13:19

Arrecife airport - Is not that far from the city, and not that far from Matagorda, about 3 miles.

BLK is an international airport, so it counts and is say walking distance from the South Pier.

Heathrow Harry 17th Jul 2012 16:30

Kai Tak was in town (if not the business centre) and both Luanda & Lisbon are damn close in

The old Jakarta domestic airport at Kemayoran was also surrounded by houses. and Adelaide is right in the city if not the absolute centre

bobsyerunlce 17th Jul 2012 21:02

Copenhagen and Lisbon are nice and close, although with a train station underneath the Arrivals hall at Copenhagen, I dont know why you would want to walk it!
Las Vegas has already been mentioned, as has San Diego, but I reckon Innsbruck is one of the closest... a brisk 30 minute walk.

PhilW1981 17th Jul 2012 22:11

Bucharest Baneasa is pretty close to town.

barry lloyd 17th Jul 2012 22:19

SDU (Santos Dumont, downtown Rio) has been mentioned. (I don't think airports come much closer to the centre than that), and there's Congonhas which is definitely downtown in Sao Paulo, although it's a sprawling city. Moscow had a city airport - actually called Centralni - until about 2005, (opposite the Lenin Stadium on Leningradsky Prospect for those who know Moscow), but it's now closed and has been built upon.

Tableview 17th Jul 2012 22:36

I've walked from Lisbon to the airport, quite a pleasant walk. I would not want to do that between Bucharest and Baneasa, it's further and walking along that road would not be fun. Henri Coanda (Otopeni) is only a mile or two further out than Baneasa.

rareair 17th Jul 2012 23:40

I've walked from one of the huge nightclubs adjacent to AEP back to the apartment where I was staying in Recoleta, on the north side of central Buenos Aires. Was completely ****ed but guess it took about half an hour.
