The other rumour is that another Irish airline is willing to step into two major euro hubs, plus a central London airport if BA drops LHR. Sorry but I simply do not understand this phrase. Why would BA drop Heathrow? What other Irish airline? RYR..REA? I am confused. |

With no Stansted and no Heathrow, LCY would be viable.

no Heathrow It would seem that the local politicos are firmly against the loss of Heathrow. I doubt that a replacement service to LCY would satisfy them. While fully understanding the damage high air passenger duty (APD) can do to the competitiveness of UK based airlines, Northern Ireland cannot be held to ransom for something beyond its responsibilities. I have said before and I repeat, that regions must have full access to the national hub airport at Heathrow. This is vital for the economic development of the Province and can only be guaranteed if the Government has power to deal with the disposal by the airlines of landing slots at Heathrow. Currently these are owned by the airlines and government has no power to intervene. Government must be able to ensure that regions have their fair share of access to this airport. Willie Walsh’s intervention today should be a wake up call that this issue needs dealing with as we cannot live in an atmosphere of uncertainty. Its bad for inward investment and bad for business and tourist confidence.’ |
But even if BA do drop LHR, Aer Lingus will still be operating BFS-LHR, and people will just simply book with them instead. The market just isn't there for an LCY route, simple as.

I don't see what it matters either way. Its all about business and who offers the best deal. I'm sure whether they are moving or not they will have spoken to BHD and looked at it. Thats how the world goes round.

I really don't see why people are soo keen to have have lingus down, I'd rather see a new airline enter the market like MON, RYR, LH and watch the market grow rather than have the 2 airports fight over the same ones we already have

It wouldn't surprise me at all from what I've heard. Domestic flights would be no bother and they could be one the "two" airlines mentioned by Ambrose. But only time will tell!!
