It won't help XL when the likes of ITN are including the fact about XL dropping the Carribean routes along with a news item about airlines in trouble and the collapse of ZOOM this will cause panic, not warranted, no doubt with folks thinking of booking with XL.

Rumour has it that XL have cancelled all there long haul for winter - any truth in this ? Anyone heard anything.

Yes, all their flights have departed as normal today (as expected). It was a stupid and unfounded rumour, and luckily the mods saw fit to remove it!

Caribbean flights cancelled as not making profit any longer, however X L are upping frequency of more profitable sanford route.
Also, majority of 767's being sold in winter as new A330's being delivered as replacements.
So we are led to understand.......

XL dont own the B767's so cant 'sell' them - lease is more and likely up and they are being returned.

the lease is not being renewed as getting new A330, no point re-leasing an aircraft to make unprofitable flights.

B763 G-VKNI is going back to the lessor at the start of November, hence the cancellation of the expensive Caribbean flights (especially now the Island authorities have withdrawn their subsidies)

One of the new A330's is being leased to Finnair for the W08/09, therefore XL will only have 1 B763 G-VKNG remaining which, if last year is anything to go by will be operating from both LGW and MAN to SFB

Deleting "Bah! Humbug!" posts & threads respects the thoughts & feelings of the unfortunate ones who are now looking for new employment, or those who fear they may be joining them.

However, I feel there is a place on these forums for postings citing the examples of camararderie of groundstaff & crews from operating airlines helping abandoned crews downroute to get home, 'chinless' executives stumping up out of their own pocket to get employees back knowing they are never going to get that money back & wondering if they'll get another position is these desperate times, reassurances from 'people in the know' that companies aren't just 'dropping routes' but expanding services to other, more yielding destinations. I think we would all go to work a little reassured knowing that there are people among us who care & will go the extra mile to get us home.

As a Captain for an airline that operates a similar programme to ZOOM, to the same destinations, I'd like a bit of an idea as to the levels of charity & goodwill there are out there should the unthinkable happen to my employer while I'm downroute with a crew.
As a former employee of XL, I'd like to know that the futures of a cracking team of people are secure & that the routes that are dropped are replaced by increased frequencies & lucrative Ad Hoc contracts.

I fear we are entering a stage of over censorship.

buzz boy, that is a fair question and the answer is not easy to find at the moment.

The best answer so far is that the whole thread was mistakenly, and accidentally, deleted. We are investigating that.

Zoom was an informative thread and we are really sorry that so much info was lost.

There are now stories in three 'respected' newspapers concerning XL, the Telegraph, Times and Daily Mail. The truth seems to be that XL's bankers (Barclays) have withdrawn funding, and the company has invited Kroll, a restructuring expert, in to help them refinance. This isn't scaremongering, it's happening.
Currently, flights are operating as normal. Previous comments on this thread refer to the cancellation of the Caribbean winter series, and this seems to be an indication of tough times on long-haul. It's a sensible precaution to take, so that the group minimizes its potential cash requirements. I'm sure XL will reduce their winter European flying programme, as they did last year, to ensure they are well positioned for summer 09.
Hopefully XL will find the funding they need, but it's inevitable that some companies will fail in the current climate. The good news is that the group's holiday operations are reporting good forward bookings.

Just a quick question:

If XL are (Possibly) in a bit of financial difficulty as reported in these newspapers does this mean that their Florida Arm (Travel City Direct) are in the same position?
