But your missing the point.As mentioned previously it is well publicised in the terms and conditions which you agree to when booking on the REA website .It is only as stealthy as RYR/EIN baggage charges,credit card fees etc.


People defending & not speaking up against these type of stealth charges, in all industries, is the reason we live in rip-off Britain.
Careful now...Last time I checked Waterford was located in rip-off Ireland!!:E:E

No No No... You are missing the point !

Waterford / any other airport can glady charge this fee (albeit still a con), but...IT SHOULD BE IN WITH THE TICKET WHEN BOUGHT !

Airports should charge airlines, and airlines re-coup the fee by increasing fares that passengers pay from that Airport.

Obviously they have a short fall in funds for development, therefore I see two choices....

1) Don't develop
2) Increase Landing Fees

Charging customers directly is subsidising cheaper landing fees :=

Do you have any knowledge of the aviation industry or are you just a passenger who doesn't like to pay for the things they use.

£5.00 is hardly the end of the world - if they were demanding £20.00 each then fair do's. Maybe you should direct your complaint to the airport because moaning about it on here isn't gonna get you anyway - if you feel that strongly about it tell the airport

Why doesn't Waterford throw its toys out of the pram and demand a Heathrow service?
After all there are thousands of foreign companies operating in the South East and plenty of farmers as well.

Doesn't Aer Arran offer LTN service?? I don't think anyone would offer a LHR link - possibly a LGW service but I am not familiar with Waterford Airports runway - would a FR a/c be able to operate in and out on a LGW run or is it aimed more towards REA and their ATRs??

It was I who posted the original whinge about the 5 euro charge (again this was not about the AMOUNT charged, but the manner in which it was taken - "you're in seat 24, here's your boarding card and we'll be boarding in 30 minutes. We NOW require that you pay a 5 euro aiport development charge"!!!!!!!)

Anyway ... I got on to the airport and got the following reply:

I am sorry you felt unhappy about having to pay the facilities charge at Waterford Airport recently.
Waterford Airport is a small regional airport, at an early stage in its development. The number of scheduled services is growing rapidly, providing convenient local access to many European destinations; we currently have flights on seven different routes. As services increase the airport facilities need to be upgraded in capacity and quality. As it is still early days in the overall development of the airport, the Board of Directors approved the decision to introduce the Facilities Charge to assist the airport in meeting the challenges ahead. Waterford Airport is not unusual in asking for this charge, there is a similar type of charge at the other regional airports at Kerry (€6) and Knock (€10).
The airport does Endeavour to provide advance information about the facilities charge as much as possible. Information about the charge is contained in section 10.2 – Airport charges, of the Aer Arann terms and conditions on their web site and on any printed terms and conditions. There is a very large sign at the entrance to the airport advising departing passengers that they will be asked to pay this charge at check in. There is also a facilities charge information sheet on the check in desk. The option of charging the fee at a separate location in the airport has been considered, but it was decided against on the basis that passengers would have to queue twice. It is felt that the check in payment option is the most convenient for passengers.

I would like to thank you for using Waterford Airport and hope that you will see the benefits of the funds raised when you use the airport in the future.


Couple of quick points:
1. Didn't see the 'very large sign at the entrance'
2. As for the 'mentioned in section 10.2 of Aer Arann's T&C' I'd draw you back to a point made about same in a previous post of mine.

People dont mind paying it (except maybe aidanf :D) - they would just like it included in the ticket price.

Hey its not as if its national toll roads or gordon brown you're dealing with.
Unlike them it appears you will actually see your funds making a difference!:ok:

While I know the comment was tongue-in-cheek, it might be worth pointing out that I don't mind paying the fee, and I don't have a problem with the amount of same.

I have a problem with the manner in which it was requested and would have preferred to either (a) have it flagged correctly and obviously earlier, or, (b) have it taken at time of booking

If that's the case about Kerry then they need to update their website, it currently says:

Only 1 month later I get to catch this thread.

a €5 or a €10. Outstanding value. EIWF are only being honest about their charges - or at least upfront. From passing through the airport recently I would happily pay more than a tenner or whatever. If you go to Dublin from down here. You've the wonderful M50 carpark to progress around. Then you arrive at the Galway side of the Dublin Airport parking system - drag the flask and sangwiches along in case you starve out there. Finally you get into the terminal building - if your with EI - happy days do the bag and drop. But god help you on a charter. A week in the Q etc etc. Then you get the air side...........a bustling mini city wonderful. But not for the stressed souls out there. I'm lucky - I can use the Anna Livia - and get to escape. Of course if your flying FR you do have the Dublin Airport Mini Marathon to get to the gates. Now enough moaning on this one.
Lets go to Shannon. Lovely Airport. But miles from here. I'll skip Cork - Tom the Tenor will be out with his shotgun:) Defence of the Realm!

So, which do you prefer - Dublin or Waterford and is it worth a tenner? you decide! So will RE open a CDG or ORY service????????MMMMM

If it were added into the fare. No one would notice. The public are almost oblivious to taxes these days. It's just go straight to the end of the website - total the fare and then decide of they are going. The banner €1.99 each way just lures them in. An invitation to treat is the term I beleive - however, as the money goes to the airport for their service collect it at the check-in and drive on. At least they get the money straight away and we as passengers surely have enough change from the session the night before!

This is complete Rubbish!!!!


People stop complaining about the very very meagar sum of €5 to help the development of the poor relation of Regional airports in Ireland.In saying this EIWF is one of the busiest and mostly on it's own merits.
Up until recently,EIWF has never been looked favourably upon by the government.A simple PSO route was never established because of the "Proximity of Waterford to Dublin". If you take out a map,you will quickly realise that Waterford is relatively the same distance from Dublin as Galway or Sligo.And don't even make me mention that excuse of a road to Dublin from Waterford. Regionals deserve their cut just as much as the fat cat internationals,so just swallow your pride and part with your fiver people!!!:ok:

What happened to the 146 that FlyU/Nex Aviation was operating for Slatterys Sun from Waterford and Galway this summer? Is it still around?

Captain Planet->It's not the amount that's being charged, but the way it is being collected that makes people unhappy.

A number of years ago, I ran into this situation at Vancouver International where they had a similar airport improvement fee. I had spent almost all my Canadian dollars. My credit card was at it's limit and suddenly I had to pay C$20. I had to run to a bureau de change to change 20 pounds into canadian dollars (the commission was ridiculous) just to get out out of the country.

Now, I don't remember the travel agent mentioning it when I booked the ticket and I don't think I ever saw written down terms and conditions.

If the fee is so small and so justifiable, why isn't it included in the general airport charges?

They're operating out of Copenhagen for the winter months but are due back in Waterford around April/May '08. Watch this space,EIWF will be an interesting airport next summer.

I do understand and fully appreciate your point but Waterford did do something similar to what you're suggesting when Euroceltic Airways were operating out of EIWF.Anyway to cut a long story short,Euroceltic liquidated and the airport was left with 20,000 or so less fivers.

This method may not be fitting with passengers but it works.
