Vive la France?
Regarding Ryanair's recent announcement that the Shannon - Nantes route will not be operated between November and February, does anyone have any info on the bookings for Ryanair's new French routes from Shannon?
Shannon - Biarritz Shannon - Carcassonne While Carcassonne and Biarritz (and Shannon!) are all fantastic destinations, I just can't imagine the forementioned routes doing so well in the winter months (apart from the occasional rugby match). |
Don't know if any of you saw the ad in yesterday's International Hearld Tribune (and most likely some other papers as well) seeking a development manager for SNN.

A380 due in Shannon
A380 is enroute from LFBO to SNN for some Wash & Gos...weather permitting of course.

Shannon-Amsterdam
ok i set this up already as a thread b4 i knew there was a whole thread dedicated to Shannon (I'm new to this website) but anyway...does anyone have any opinions on the possibility of a Shannon-Amsterdam flight, and who'd operate it with what type of aircraft?
|
...ok:confused: ...but also to the general public who fancy a city-break!;)
|
shannon55
Ya, i remember EUjet had plans for a Shannon to Amsterdam route although I'm not sure did they go bust ever before the route took off? I would defo see a market for it! But as you suggest, difficult to see who would operate it. The most feasible airline would be Aer Lingus for me. Can't see KLM taking an interest... And Transavia seem more interested with the sunnier destinations... |
Yes, I dont think EuJET were still around for even the first flight to AMS:* Unless cityjet extend their co-operation with Air France to KLM now that they're merged and serve the route with one of their AVRO RJ85s??? It might be possible seeming that there's rumours circulating about a 5 times daily Dub-AMS route to be launched by cityjet on behalf of KLM,they might operate other routes for KLM like they do for AF at CDG....stranger things have happened!;)
Also if Ryanair believe that there would be sufficient demand to support a route to Biarritz, then maybe a SNN-Eindhoven route isn't too far away as I think Eindhoven as an alternative to AMS would most definitely have a larger demand then Biarritz. That ,however, would definitely turn any other operator interested in launching a direct flight to AMS off.:ugh: Although I would love to see Aer Lingus expand their Shannon short-haul services, it seems unlikely:( given that they seem comitted to cork and dublin as their main short-haul bases:{ I live in hope!;) |
If I remember rightly EUjet went 3 days before the launch of the AMS route.... :ouch:
Aer Lingus....maybe. But they have no apparent interest in Shannon at the minute. They only fly here becuase they have to. |
Rallye EI-BFP
Ah hello EI-BFP.....EI is a private company, and has not been our 'flag carrier' for quite a long time. EI does not HAVE to fly anywhere, look at the modern route system, no domestic service and no service from the regional airports(NOC, GWY, etc). Make no mistake EI is making money on the LHR route and thats why they operate it, to add an AMS service would only dilute yields, as SNN already has a strong T/A route network and connections to DUB. As far as I can see no-one will operate AMS-SNN, why bother? FR would just crush them, and any way EI operates an(almost) double daily service to AMS from ORK already. FR also has many connections to mainland Europe. No real need for the service. |
I disagree:= . I doubt any passengers from the environs of shannon...i.e.Clare,Limerick,Nth Tipp e.t.c who wish to take an early morning flight to AMS to connect to KLM's flights to the far East (HongKong,Beijing e.t.c) would fancy having to trek to cork when they would prefer to be able to use the large international airport on their doorstep. While Heathrow is always an option for connecting to longhaul flights, why cant we have the option of another major european hub?
Even a Small RJ service would allow passengers from the shannon catchment area the ability to use their local airport for connecting to KLM's network and citybreaks.;) |
Although EI operate 11x weekly from Cork, at a guesstimate only 40% of travellers on the route have Amsterdam as their final destination. Most are connecting on to other flights. Without those passengers, a route to Amsterdam is only marginally viable.
Looking at the airlines that have operations set up in Shannon and Amsterdam, only KLM look like they offer the sort of service that is required. But at the moment, they only use EI codeshares to serve Ireland and unless that changes I can't imagine them looking at Shannon. It's a pity in some ways, because a 2x daily Fokker 70 service would more than likely work for them. |
Heard rumours of an AMS/GWY
|
Yes but thats a charter-only service... I think its united travel with a Bae 146.So if United travel think their is sufficient demand for an AMS city-break service (albeit I think its just for an 8/9 week period), then surely a Shannon service which would attract not only city-break passengers, but also business travellers, passengers who want to connect to KLMs worldwide schedule and who currently have to either go through Heathrow or have to go to Cork/Dublin to go to AMS and also people wishing to visit family & friends there. Surely that would justify a Fokker 70 service as previously mentioned or a Cityjet Avro RJ85??

Shannon - Amsterdam
Hmmmm.... Ya, Ryanair could make Shannon to Eindhoven work I believe and the day should come when this route will be introduced.
Meanwhile, a Shannon - Amsterdam service would be a winner in my opinion. Once daily with Aer Lingus, or maybe 1-3-5-7. To think that Aerlingus flights from both Cork and Dublin to Amsterdam have fantastic load factors, regularly 100%!!! And judging by the prices the yields are equally delicious. In this context an EI Shannon to Amsterdam service seems feasible. Interestingly, a few months ago i stumbled across the fishing website of this guy http://www.pike-ireland.net/index.html who is a Dutchman living near Shannon who would surely be one of many to appreciate and use a SNN-AMS or SNN-EIN service. PS - The reduction in SNN to LHR is a result of the FR, U2, EI fares war on London routes from SNN. This winter LHR timetable was devised before U2 pulled out and FR announced significant reductions. I can imagine it will rise again for summer 2007. |

SNN
Cork's failure to attract a transatlantic service should act as a warning to SNN of the difficulties it may face when its special status goes.
Will DL, CO AA and even EI really want to serve it on a year round basis. |
