As BMI have a codeshare with lufthansa maybe a new route to Frankfurt or Munich could be feasible seeming neither are served from Northern Ireland and could open up a world of connections via either hub

Chidken Sangwich 22nd Feb 2017 19:46

Righto, apologies for touching the raw nerve.

cuthere 22nd Feb 2017 19:52

Don't let Mutley Shriek.....I mean DC bother you Chidken. He's probably still hungover from his birthday on the 11th.

Your info turned out to be good. None of us guessed BMI-R. If you've any further info, please do share.

Very good point!

BHX

How about a bit of 2+2 = 5

Which airline restarts flights next week from BHX then open a base when another couple of routes start in May?????????

Trouble is no money on the table for a BHX route and I doubt a 145 on LDY-BHX would be viable in the long-term without a bit of help.

Pete

Hahaha. This thread gets even more hilarious. Frankfurt,Munich. OMG you lot get a grip. Cutters, I think you have a worrying bit of an obsession with me. So for the fifth time, name and shame. 14 million subsidy plus a newly 4 million PSO plus this year's 2.75 million from rate payers again makes nearly over 20 million from 2010. The place needs shutting down asap, never mind thinking about FRA and MUC.

cuthere 22nd Feb 2017 20:47

Well, there's proven demand for LDY-BHX, but my concern with BMI-R is that, unless they're changing their model, they're expensive for the ordinary punter. We will see.

Mutley. I've already told you once today, if you want to talk to me directly, send PM me.

I follow most threads here and I have yet to see you do anything but troll DC9_10. If you don't have something constructive to say wind your neck in.

Ultimately this is great news for the airport. Hopefully fares will be reasonable but you do have to still worry for the staff at airport on cuts. Even with the 2 flights a day you are talking less than 100 passengers per day. Even 60 LF on RYR would see more so the airport management need to get finger out and replace the demand that is proven to be there. A few years ago there was ~400k passengers through the doors

AerRyan 22nd Feb 2017 20:52

Certainly will be a great increase in passenger numbers, and will allow businesses in NI to access London much easier.

DC9_10 22nd Feb 2017 20:54

See you've changed my name again Cutters. I could never PM you. Rather get the better of you every time on an open forum. Sixth time now, name and shame.

Why is it hilarious? If anything the pettiness on this thread is hilarious. If they were going to launch an additional route (not saying they will), Munich in particular is probably one of the only feasible routes due to the reasons stated above. It doesn't take a lot to fill up a 49 seat aircraft to a hub airport of 100's of connections with Derry having a population of 250,000+ let alone the rest of N.I. which has no connection with Germany aside from Berlin.

AerRyan 22nd Feb 2017 21:04

It's like somebody flying from Derry personally hurts you, is there a knife piercing your back every time the airport does well?

It's actually the most pathetic thing I've read on this forum, and I've read some ****e on here.

BMI Regional to London Stansted begins March 26th. Reported by Julian O'Neill on Twitter

2 Daily, Saturday is 1 daily. E145
BFS BHD - good call, nice to get heads up!

Nice to see City of Derry Apt progress like any other commercial enterprise. I'm not convinced that bmir is the right fit. Positioned as a niche, high fares business airline, it is suggested that they are going to offer 26 flights on the route per week, that equates to 1300 seats per week, at a 65% load factor, that equates to 845 passengers in total per week. In contrast to 2646 (daily 738) per week on FR, at probably 90% load/ 2381. So passenger numbers will decline on the London corridor by 60-70%.

The result is a significant deterioration in airport revenue on all fronts. We knew FR were leaving, but a more positive development would have been BE bringing a London route and other UK points.

Just like the cash for ash scheme, the proposed eye watering subsidy to UA for staying on a BFS, Derry City Council pumping money into the Airport does not represent value for money for the taxpayer.

On the flip side, the hope would be that Loganair may see potential as part of same holdings company to add routes to LDY, like EDI, MAN etc.

DC9_10 22nd Feb 2017 21:28

BMIR will not be launching a German route from LDY. LDY can't support a service to Manchester never mind Munich. As for talking ****e, AerRyan certainly seems to be the master of that when lambasted on other forums.

chuboy 22nd Feb 2017 22:44

Manchester is served quite well from two airports down the road while Germany is not. I don't think it will happen either but it's not entirely ridiculous an idea.

Disappointing that there are presently limited opportunities for passengers to interline to/from LDY but give it time.

Amelia Earhart 22nd Feb 2017 22:51

Just looking at the BMI Regional website and the price of flights are eye watering particularly compared with the Ryanair fares that the public have gotten used to.

The PSO will not be subject to APD which may help a bit but it could still be relatively expensive. Other routes would be subject to APD.

It seems to be business orientated and definitely not attractive for a weekend away. Certainly LDY needs business friendly services and that was missing previously but now the airport will be missing the large volume low cost passengers.

I reckon there is a fair chance the route is going to fail and in doing so will cause irreparable damage to any last shreds of credibility that the airport has.

mart901 22nd Feb 2017 22:58

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the PSO tendered on the principle of the operator having aircraft based at LDY?
Surely BMI won't have an aircraft sitting on the tarmac from mid morning till early evening or all day practically on a Saturday??? Surely there must be more to this, another UK route or something into Europe.

cuthere 22nd Feb 2017 23:05

Mart, I agree, but that doesn't necessarily mean the based planes will be used on flights from LDY. Having said that, unless they're opening routes from STN then there might be more to this. However, having used them, and as Amelia says, they're not cheap and they'd be the most expensive airline in Northern Ireland. I've read rumours on other threads that they may be getting Sukhoi Superjets, which seat ~100 - if true this may bring prices down. The announcement should be interesting.

In my opinion I think this is a disaster passenger numbers will tumble from current levels and the general leisure passenger will not use this service at the current price structure they will simply go to Belfast and even knock at the Ryanair fares

davidjohnson6 23rd Feb 2017 00:05

I've looked at the BMI website - but neither Derry nor Stansted appear as destinations.
I know that BMI is not in general a LCC, but could someone post on here some sample one-way or return fares on a range of dates specifically for the LDY-STN route, so we can all understand how much tickets are likely to be ? If the fares are over £500 one way, I suspect one might need to wait a day or two so that rather than just seeing the price of full-fare tickets, the price of tickets booked in advance (but with restrictions) become visible as well.
