Lyneham to close?

The beancounters have finally ousted the lunatics at the asylum. The whole of the UK’s strategic tanker and transport assets will be dependent on the fate of the single runway at Nause Brighton.

It looks as if the Ministry of Defence must now be considered a growing and serious threat to the safety and security of the United Kingdom.

Presumably you've written to your MP?

If Rompers Green really is to close, will it be redeveloped into a regional airport? Or will it go the way of Upper Heyford, Abingdon, Little Rissington etc etc

Another piece of history "down the stank".

What about the poor pub landlord who'll have to supply his own car park lighting now?

Its strange that this proposed closure hasn't been linked with any proposed fleet reduction.

Wait until the good citizens of Oxfordshire realise how the noise levels will increase when dozens of Hercules are added to the existing Brize fleets!

Or will RAF Wooten Lynestoke be kept on as a relief landing ground?

Hullavington, as indeed South Cerney, is now inhabited by the Army which is probably the fate of Lyneham in the medium term as and when the RAF move to Brize. A ready made camp with all its associated infrastructure close to the M4/ Salisbury Plain not to mention a fully equipped airfield thrown in as a bonus. Hullavington becomes a new housing area a stones throw from the motorway and Cerney becomes an industrial development area similar to Kemble. Simple really.......................

Lyneham is not due to close until 2012 - a lot can happen in nine years - a change of government for one.

Well this must be a first.

The MOD usually authorise the spending of millions of pounds in taxpayers money refurbishing a base before closing or mothballing it.
From an outsiders viewpoint, it seems a sensible decision to close Lynham and move the operations elsewhere, it requires a considerable amount of money spending on it just to keep it up to scratch, never mind any improvements.

Brize must be creaking at the seams by now, a little bird with his beak in high places told me that the big plan is to carry out the much needed improvements there and then close Lynham - well before 2012.

Apparantly Coltishall is on the same list as Lynham, but no one will say anything about that until they find the second set of ignition keys for the Eurofighter......
